Development of a fretting-fatigue mapping concept: The effect of material properties and surface treatments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Fretting-fatigue induced by combined localized cyclic contact motion and external bulk fatigue loadings may result in premature and dramatic failure of the contacting components.

VIBROTHERMOGRAPHIC CRACK HEATING: A FUNCTION OF VIBRATION AND CRACK SIZE

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2009
Vibrothermography is an inspection technique that detects cracks by observing vibration induced crack heating. Frictional crack heating in a vibrating specimen is directly linked to the resonant vibrational stress on the crack. In simple geometries we can measure the vibrational mode structure and intuit the dynamic vibrational stress field on the ...

Fractal scaling and crack-size effects on creep crack growth

open access: yesStrength, Fracture and Complexity, 2020
Scaling effects on the creep crack growth behaviour are investigated by analyzing the results of compact tension (CT) tests on different-sized notched steel specimens appearing in the literature. Creep crack growth rate data are correlated to the elastic stress-intensity factor in terms of a Paris-type law, da∕dt = C0Kq, where C0 turns out to be a ...

Fatigue Life Assessment and Reliability Analysis of Cope-Hole Details in Steel Bridges

open access: yesThe Baltic Journal of Road and Bridge Engineering, 2020
Cope-hole details are widely applied to steel bridges. However, the safety of steel bridges is influenced by the fatigue performance of welded details.

Effect of grain disorientation on early fatigue crack propagation in face-centred-cubic polycristals: A three-dimensional dislocation dynamics investigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Three-dimensional dislocation dynamics simulations are used to study micro-crack interaction with the first micro-structural barrier in face-centred cubic bi-crystals loaded in high cycle fatigue conditions. In the examined configuration, we assumed that

Crack-size and crack-orientation distributions of brittle materials.

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series A, 1989
In this report, we derived a new theory by combining the previously obtained statistical theory fracture location with the multiaxial distribution function. Using this theory, we analysed not only 3 crack-size ditribution function but also the crack-orientation distribution. Both distribution function are considerably affected by the fracture criteria.

Effect of circular holes on the ratchet limit and crack tip plastic strain range in a centre cracked plate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper a centre cracked plate subjected to cyclic tensile loading and cyclic bending moment is considered. The effect of circular holes drilled in the region of the crack tip on the ratchet limit and crack tip plastic strain range is studied ...

A crack-like notch analogue for a safe-life fretting fatigue design methodology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Various analogies have recently been proposed for comparing the stress fields induced in fretting fatigue contact situations, with those of a crack and a sharp or a rounded notch, resulting in a degree of uncertainty over which model is most appropriate ...

Influences of Residual Stress, Surface Roughness and Peak-Load on Micro-Cracking: Sensitivity Analysis

open access: yesMetals, 2021
This paper provides further understanding of the peak load effect on micro-crack formation and residual stress relaxation. Comprehensive numerical simulations using the finite element method are applied to simultaneously take into account the effect of ...

Damage process of a fiber bundle with a strain gradient [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We study the damage process of fiber bundles in a wedge-shape geometry which ensures a constant strain gradient. To obtain the wedge geometry we consider the three-point bending of a bar, which is modelled as two rigid blocks glued together by a thin ...
