Origin of crack tip instabilities [PDF]
This paper demonstrates that rapid fracture of ideal brittle lattices naturally involves phenomena long seen in experiment, but which have been hard to understand from a continuum point of view. These idealized models do not mimic realistic microstructure, but can be solved exactly and understood completely.

Crack Tip Interpolation, Revisited
Using Williams's results for displacements \(u_k(r,\theta)=a_k+b_k(\theta)r^{1/2}+c_k(\theta)r+O(r^{3/2})\), the authors investigate crack tip singularities. It is proved that the coefficients of linear terms satisfy the relation \(c_k(\pi)=c_k(-\pi)\).

Crack-tip models by Irwin and Dugdale for hydroxyl-damaged crack-tip zones
Due to the hydroxyl generation, the silica network ahead of crack tips is damaged. The consequence is a damaged crack-tip zone showing a reduced Young’s modulus. The linear-elastic fracture mechanical treatment by application of stress intensity factors becomes doubtful especially for large zones.

To quantify the extent of crack-tip plasticity, crack opening displacement (COD) and crack bridging for crack growth perpendicular (HAH) and parallel (RAR) to the tubules in elephant dentin under both hydrated and dry conditions to better understand their influence on intrinsic and extrinsic toughening during crack growth.Compact tension test-pieces ...

Automatic Crack Length Measurement Using Crack Tip Singularity.
Automatic crack length measuring equipment was developed using the crack tip singularity. The crack tip location was determined by comparing the measured strain distribution using multiple foil strain gauges and the theoretical strain distribution around the crack tip. The accuracy of crack length measurement was 0.09mm (standard deviation).

Crack growth criteria and crack tip models
Summary: The current status of crack tip characterizations is reviewed. Several unresolved areas for further research are identified. Singular fields for stationary and moving crack tips in different nonlinear materials are reviewed and special emphasis is put on the extension of the region where these fields dominate.

Effect of crack propagation on crack tip fields
Crack closure influences fatigue crack growth rate and must be included in the design of components. Plasticity induced crack closure is intimately linked with the crack tip plastic deformation, which becomes residual as the crack propagates. The objective here is to study numerically the effect of crack propagation on crack tip fields.
