Association of the ICH Score With Withdrawal of Life‐Sustaining Treatment Over a 10‐Year Period

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) score was developed to enhance provider communication and facilitate early severity assessment. We examined the association of the ICH score with mortality and withdrawal of life‐sustaining treatment (WLST) in a large, multicenter stroke registry, and evaluated temporal trends in these associations.

Association Between Pre-operative BUN and Post-operative 30-Day Mortality in Patients Undergoing Craniotomy for Tumors: Data From the ACS NSQIP Database

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2022
ObjectiveThere is limited evidence to clarify the specific relationship between pre-operative blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and post-operative 30-day mortality in patients undergoing craniotomy for tumors. Therefore, we aimed to investigate this relationship

Intraoperative detection of blood vessels with an imaging needle during neurosurgery in humans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Intracranial hemorrhage can be a devastating complication associated with needle biopsies of the brain. Hemorrhage can occur to vessels located adjacent to the biopsy needle as tissue is aspirated into the needle and removed. No intraoperative technology

A Vertically‐Stacked Optoelectronic Sensor for Localized Hemodynamics Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a hemodynamics monitoring sensor that features vertically stacked microLEDs and a heterogeneously integrated photodetector. The vertically stacked microLEDs enable localized measurements, and by designing the interoptode distance according to the depth of the target region, this vertically stacked optoelectronic sensor is ...

The comparative effects of desflurane and isoflurane on intraoperative cerebral hemodynamics, cardiovascular changes, and post-operative recovery in patients undergoing craniotomy for supratentorial tumors

open access: yesAsian Journal of Medical Sciences, 2022
Background: Preserving hemodynamic stability, providing a slack brain, and enabling early recovery are the main criteria of neuroanesthesia. The most commonly used volatile anesthetic for neurosurgeries is isoflurane due to its favorable effects on ...

Salmonella Infection After Craniotomy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Salmonella is an uncommon cause of meningitis, especially after neurosurgery. Here, we present a case of Salmonella meningitis after craniotomy, likely due to physical contact with a snake after surgery, with contiguous spread from the patient's hand to ...

Continuous volumetric imaging via an optical phase-locked ultrasound lens

open access: yes, 2016
In vivo imaging at high spatiotemporal resolution is key to the understanding of complex biological systems. We integrated an optical phase-locked ultrasound lens into a two-photon fluorescence microscope and achieved microsecond-scale axial scanning ...

A Case Report and Overview of Familial Cerebral Cavernous Malformation Pathogenesis in an Adult Patient [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
OBJECTIVE We present a case of a 39 year-old woman who presented with a solitary cavernous malformation hemorrhage without any other lesions, and subsequently presented several months later with a new hemorrhage from a de novo lesion.

Functional Hydrogel for Modulating Lipid Droplets and Neuroinflammation in Head Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
After TBI, elevated cholesterol levels in activated microglia lead to the accumulation of cholesterol esters in lipid droplets, exacerbating neuroinflammation. A β‐cyclodextrin‐conjugated GelMA (βCD‐GelMA) hydrogel is developed to promotes cholesterol efflux and reduces LDL influx, thereby alleviating intracellular cholesterol and lipid droplet buildup.

Comparison of efficacy of butorphanol and nalbuphine as premedicant in patients undergoing elective craniotomy using propofol and desflurane anesthesia – A randomized clinical study

open access: yesAsian Journal of Medical Sciences, 2022
Background: Long duration neurosurgical procedures require the use a relatively longer acting analgesic which will give equianalgesia like a short-acting opioid without needing repeated administration or an infusion. Aims and Objectives: In this study,
