The effects of elevated temperature and dissolved CO2 on a marine foundation species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Understanding how climate change and other environmental stressors will affect species is a fundamental concern of modern ecology. Indeed, numerous studies have documented how climate stressors affect species distributions and population persistence ...

ALPHA AMYLASE DEVELOPMENT IN EMBRYOS OF CRASSOSTREA VIRGINICA

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 1964
Alpha amylase activity is absent from developmental stages of the oyster up to the straight-hinge veliger. Its development after this stage parallels the development of the intestine. After reaching a maximum at 37 hours, the enzyme drops sharply in activity, presumably because of starvation.

Effects of Co-Varying Diel-Cycling Hypoxia and pH on Growth in the Juvenile Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea virginica

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Shallow water provides important habitat for many species, but also exposes these organisms to daily fluctuations in dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH caused by cycles in the balance between photosynthesis and respiration that can contribute to repeated ...

Co-phylogeographic structure in a disease-causing parasite and its oyster host

open access: yesParasitology
With the increasing affordability of next-generation sequencing technologies, genotype-by-sequencing has become a cost-effective tool for ecologists and conservation biologists to describe a species' evolutionary history.

Characterization of haemocytes of the Indian edible oyster, Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The haemocytes of the Indian edible oyster Crassostrea madrasensis were characterized using light and electron microscopy. The light microscopic study was conducted by staining a monolayer of the haemocytes with Geimsa.

Interaction of Vibrio vulnificus and the Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea virginica

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection, 1994
The estuarine bacterium, Vibrio vulnificus , is a human pathogen associated with the consumption of raw oysters. To date, no effective means exists for the elimination of this health hazard in oysters meant for raw consumption. The purpose of this study was to investígate the interaction between V. vulnificus and the eastern oyster.

Bivalve microbiomes are shaped by host species, size, parasite infection, and environment [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
Many factors affect an organism’s microbiome including its environment, proximity to other organisms, and physiological condition. As filter feeders, bivalves have highly plastic microbiomes that are especially influenced by the surrounding seawater, yet

Metabolism of the Oyster,Crassostrea virginica [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Zoologist, 1969
SYNOPSIS. The American oyster, Crassostrea virginica , has some metabolic traits typical of marine bivalve molluscs, andsome that are apparently unique. Cvconsumption is rapid when the valves are open, but may become and remain zero for days on closure.

Metabolomic Investigations of American Oysters Using 1H-NMR Spectroscopy

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2010
The Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) is a useful, robust model marine organism for tissue metabolism studies. Its relatively few organs are easily delineated and there is sufficient understanding of their functions based on classical assays to ...
