Phosphoproteins of Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) Shell Organic Matrix

As in most biominerals, the oyster shell is a composite of inorganic crystals and an organic matrix. Its mineral is primarily calcitic calcium carbonate and its matrix is made up largely of highly acidic phosphoproteins. Among molluscs, this type of matrix may be confined to those which form the foliated microstructure.

Lysozymelike Activities in the Hemolymph of Crassostrea virginica

In recent years the presence of lysozymelike activities in the hemolymph of invertebrates has been documented with increasing frequency. Mohrig and Messner (1968) report the occurrence of lysozyme at a level of 25–500 µg/ml in the hemolymph of normal Gallaria mellonella. This level can, however, be elevated nonspecifically up to a maximum of 9000 µg/ml
