Enabling effective urban green space stewardship through planning: A qualitative comparative analysis in Southwest England

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Amid increasing urbanisation and biodiversity decline, ‘effective stewardship’ of urban green space (UGS) is a complex but critical nature‐based solution for long‐term environmental, social and economic gain. Combining stewardship and sense‐of‐place frameworks with European nature‐based solutions guidance, we investigate which social and ...

Cricket antennae shorten when bending (Acheta domesticus L.). [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Insect antennae are important mechanosensory and chemosensory organs. Insect appendages, such as antennae, are encased in a cuticular exoskeleton and are thought to bend only between segments or subsegments where the cuticle is thinner, more flexible, or

A step into the shadows: Evolutionary shifts in fruit structure and dispersal strategies in Asian mycoheterotrophic Ericaceae

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
This study examines how the fruits of non‐photosynthetic forest plants in the Monotropoideae (Ericaceae) have evolved into the diversity observed today. By analyzing four Asian species, we identified a shift from dry, dehiscent fruits that release seeds into the air to fleshy, berry‐like fruits adapted for animal dispersal.

Extraction and physicochemical characterization of chitin and chitosan isolated from house cricket

open access: yesBiomedical Materials, 2017
Chitin ranks next to cellulose as the most important bio-polysaccharide which can primarily be extracted from crustacean shells. However, the emergence of new areas of the application of chitin and its derivatives are on the increase and there is growing

Nanomaterials' Multigenerational Effects by Single and Joint Exposure in Non‐mammalian Models

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Nanotoxicology has mainly focused on single‐generation studies, leaving multigenerational toxicity underexplored. Having animal welfare recently gained importance, we aimed to provide the state‐of‐the‐art of knowledge about multigenerational effects in non‐mammalian models in the case of nanomaterials (NM) single and joint exposure to other ...

‘Using anuran community diversity and Pseudacris crucifer to predict landscape quality across a land use gradient'

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
As human‐modified landscape and climate changes proliferate, maintaining biodiversity and understanding the function and quality of available habitat is imperative. As anurans (frogs/toads) such as Pseudacris crucifer, can be an indicator species of habitat quality and ecosystem productivity, studying the anuran community in a mixed‐land use region ...
