Influence of elevation, climate, snowmelt and floral abundance on body size of solitary bees

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
We measured body size in bee species from a 10‐year specimen collection from Colorado sub‐alpine meadows (2450–3450 m) and tested effects of elevation and annual snowmelt, climate and floral abundance. 2 out of 4 bee species collected across a broad elevation range showed a decline in body size with higher elevations; the other two showed no effect ...

Effects of cricket (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) frasson growth and nutrient content of the plant Commelina petersiiHassk

open access: yesJournal of Agriculture, Food and Environment
Cricket frass, the excrement produced by crickets, is a natural waste of insect farming that offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to synthetic fertilizers for resource-limited farmers. This study investigated the ...

Pink Cricket Balls May Be Visually Challenging at Sunset

open access: yesi-Perception, 2017
Cricket is one of the world’s most popular sports, followed by hundreds of millions of people. It can be dangerous, played with a hard ball flying at great velocities, and accidents have occasionally been fatal.

Leaders Are Somethin' Else: Behavioural Variation Associated With Roles During Tandem Running Recruitment

open access: yesEthology, EarlyView.
In this study, we found moderate to strong repeatabilities in behavioural variables measuring the personality traits: activity, aggressiveness and exploration. Similarly, the probability of acting as a leader during tandem running in an emigration event was moderately (R = 0.469) repeatable.

Salty crackers enriched with cricket (Acheta domesticus) powder: a comprehensive quality and safety assessment study

open access: yesFood Chemistry: X
The formation of acrylamide was investigated in salty crackers enriched with cricket powder (Acheta domesticus) since its addition increases the free asparagine content.

Dietary selectivity mediates niche overlap and interspecific competition in a reedbed warbler community in southern Europe

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Sympatric species are expected to use resources differently along one or more ecological dimensions. This can be complex when there is partial separation along multiple dimensions, such as where bird species exhibit similarities in habitat use and diet.

Not all crickets are equal: selective shrike predation highlights the conservation value of diverse arthropod communities to grassland birds

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Understanding dietary preferences and prey selection is pivotal for interpreting the ecology and conservation needs of threatened species. We investigated the diet composition and prey selection of the Red‐backed Shrike Lanius collurio in a montane grassland of the central Italian Apennines, with special regard to sex‐related differences and the ...

Local habitat, not landscape diversity, drives richness and reproduction of cavity‐nesting bees and wasps in agricultural landscapes

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Local habitat type and hedgerow cover strongly shape bee and wasp richness, but only weakly their reproductive output, outweighing the landscape diversity effects at the 1‐km2 scale. Forests host more wasp but fewer bee species, whereas orchards support high richness of both; bee reproduction patterns are driven by one dominant species, while wasp ...

Use of House Cricket (Acheta domesticus) Powder in Yoghurt Products

open access: yesFoods
This study aims to implement and increase values regarding the use of cricket powder in food. This is due to the need to increase the range of products enriched with cricket powder in order to increase the market and acceptance of insects in the diet ...

Effects of Rearing Density on Growth, Adult Emergence and Survival in the Edible Cricket Gryllodes sigillatus

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gryllodes sigillatus is an increasingly important species in edible insect production, yet the optimal rearing density for this species under commercial conditions remains poorly defined. This study evaluated the effects of five rearing densities (1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 and 4 mL of newly hatched nymphs, corresponding to approximately 0.144–0.385 ...
