Assessing the Impact of Urbanization on Grasshopper Behaviour—A Fieldwork Approach

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Urbanization is one of the most significant land‐use changes globally, profoundly impacting biodiversity across taxa. Insects, including grasshoppers (Orthoptera), are particularly sensitive to urban pressures, often exhibiting both morphological and behavioural adaptations.

Integrative architecture and structural boundaries of the subdigital adhesive toe pads of Gekko gecko (Linnaeus, 1758) and guidelines for toe pad demarcation in other geckos

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The adhesively competent toe pads of Gekko gecko (and other geckos) are delimited by a combination of external and deep anatomical features and cannot be identified based upon external scale form alone. We encourage future investigators to delimit toe pads in this functionally and anatomically meaningful fashion.

Going silent? Evidence for independent losses of acoustic communication in tree crickets (Insecta, Orthoptera, Grylloidea, Oecanthidae)

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
Our ancestral state reconstruction in tree crickets reveals multiple independent and irreversible losses of sound‐producing and ‐receiving structures, supporting the convergent evolution of the silent phenotype. We demonstrate strong evolutionary integration between forewings and tympana, although the discovery of ‘silent listeners′ and ‘deaf singers ...

Doing Justice to Life in All Its Dimensions: Nurturing Humanism as Aesthetic Existence in the Church as a Sphere of Freedom

open access: yesModern Theology, EarlyView.
Abstract In this essay the author examines what Dietrich Bonhoeffer meant when he wrote from prison to his friend Eberhard Bethge and said that he wanted to retrieve “aesthetic existence” in the life of the church as a sphere of freedom. This is related to what he also told Bethge, namely, that it is “only as we hold fast to Christ as cantus firmus ...

Floral bilateral symmetry: one axis, many details

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Dorsal petal morphological diversity among monkeyflower species. Summary Symmetry is a major component of floral diversity. Most flowers are radially or bilaterally symmetric, with bilateral symmetry (monosymmetry) having evolved repeatedly from radial ancestors. Since the identification of the dorsal identity gene CYCLOIDEA (CYC) in snapdragon, floral

Comparative analysis of immune responses in ovipositing and non‐ovipositing females of European earwig Analyse comparative de la réponse immunitaire avant et après la ponte chez le forficule européen

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, EarlyView.
Oviposition and care decrease the total haemocyte concentration. Oviposition and care affect haemocyte type proportions. Serratia marcescens challenge does not affect the immune cell parameters. Abstract Reproduction and immunity are essential biological processes that compete for resources and energy.

Defecation in preparation for ecdysis drives microplastic clearance in cricket nymphs

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, EarlyView.
In preparation for ecdysis, cricket nymphs cease feeding and gradually clear their gut contents via frass production, which removes most ingested MPs from their digestive tract. Following exoskeletal moulting, the foregut lining, including any remaining MPs, is shed and excreted alongside frass approximately 6 h later.

Understanding Banter: A Systematic Review of Literature to Conceptualize the Behaviors That Characterize Banter

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Psychology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Banter represents an interaction practice that is typical of many close social relationships with behaviors often ambiguous in nature and maybe aggressive. This review summarizes and synthesizes the literature on offline and online banter published between 2000 and 2022 to examine: (a) the behavioral and situational factors that characterize ...
