Critical-incidence coupling to intersubband excitations

Solid State Communications, 1994
Abstract For infrared spectroscopy of low-dimensional electron systems we suggest a geometry of critical-angle total internal reflection. An external polarizer then allows one to orient the electric field at the interface either parallel or perpendicular to the growth plane.

Magnetic Excitations in an Itinerant Ferromagnet near Quantum Criticality

Physical Review Letters, 2007
We determine the initial temperature dependence of the exchange splitting Delta(T) in the weak itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn2 (T{C}=28 K) using the de Haas-van Alphen effect. There is a large decrease in Delta with temperature in the range 0.5< or =T< or =4 K. A comparison of Delta(T) with the magnetization M(T) shows that the dominant process responsible

Aseismic Design by Way of Critical Excitation

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1973
The critical excitation of a structure is the ground motion which produces the most severe response when compared with all other excitations of the same or lesser intensity. It is a concept which can be used in principle to assess the earthquake resistance of the structure. The paper presents evidence that it holds promise also for use in practice.

Influence of the critical curvature on spiral initiation in an excitable medium

Physical Review E, 1994
Spiral waves are created in a Belousov-Zhabotinsky medium due to the presence of some inert obstacle placed into that medium. The eikonal equation, which is completely valid when the excitability of the system remains constant, is shown to be insufficient when media with different excitabilities are used, as predicted by Zykov's kinematical theory ...
