A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Multiple‐Instance Superparameterization: 1. Concept, and Predictability of Precipitation

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2019
We have investigated the predictability of precipitation using a new configuration of the superparameterized Community Atmosphere Model (SP‐CAM). The new configuration, called the multiple‐instance SP‐CAM, or MP‐CAM, uses the average heating and drying ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

On the critical behaviour of two-dimensional liquid crystals

open access: yesCondensed Matter Physics, 2010
The Lebwohl-Lasher (LL) model is the traditional model used to describe the nematic-isotropic transition of real liquid crystals. In this paper, we develop a numerical study of the temperature behaviour and of finite-size scaling of the two-dimensional ...

New critical phenomena in 2d quantum gravity

open access: yes, 1994
We study $q=10$ and $q=200$ state Potts models on dynamical triangulated lattices and demonstrate that these models exhibit continuous phase transitions, contrary to the first order transition present on regular lattices.

Establishing an assay to evaluate d‐amino acid oxidase enzyme kinetics and inhibition using WST‐8 redox dye

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated a novel WST‐8‐based assay for evaluating d‐Amino acid oxidase (DAO) inhibitors. We confirmed its effectiveness using known inhibitors and found that uremic toxins possess relatively weak inhibitory activity compared to existing drugs.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Traces of tricritical dynamics beyond SSB in finite-size systems undergoing second-order phase transition: the case of the 3D Ising model

open access: yesFrontiers in Complex Systems
In finite-size thermal systems that exhibit second-order phase transition, the fluctuations of the order parameter ϕn obey type I intermittent dynamics at their pseudocritical temperature Tpc.

Dynamic Critical Phenomena in Trapped Bose Gases

open access: yes, 2001
Nonlinear dynamics of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate, subject to the action of a resonant external field, is studied. This field produces a spatio-temporal modulation of the trapping potential with the frequency close to the transition frequency ...
