Critical Reversal Speed

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1943
THIS article is intended, firstly, as a means to a quick approximate determination of the critical reversal speed of a wing, and secondly to give a clearer insight of why approximations can be given for the general formula for determining K, when the aileron chord and wing chord are of linear taper at least over the aileron portion.

Critical Speed Damper

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1963
It is shown that a damper applied to the spherical bearing at the ends of a rotating shaft to damp pitch and yaw motions of the journal bearing can markedly reduce the deflection caused by unbalance near critical speeds. Equations are given for optimizing the damping and for computing the damping moment which must be carried by the journal bearing.

Critical Speed of Centrifugal Pumps

The Shock and Vibration Digest, 1984
Until recently, critical speed calculations of centrifugal pumps were made without considering the rotor dynamic effects of close clearance running fits. Publications in the last few years have made it clear that these effects must be considered in order to make the computations relevant to pump operation.

Critical Speeds of Monoplanes

The Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1937
The fact that attention must be given to stiffness as well as strength in aeroplane design is now generally recognised. The provision of adequate strength alone is not sufficient to ensure that an aeroplane is immune from such troubles as flutter, loss of lateral control due to twisting of the wing and wing divergence.

Critical swimming speed: its ecological relevance

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Molecular & Integrative Physiology, 2001
Critical swimming speed (U(crit)) is a standard measurement to assess swimming capabilities of fishes. To conduct this measurement a fish is introduced into a water tunnel in which the current velocity can be controlled by the investigator. At the beginning of the measurement water velocity is low, approximately 1 body length (BL) s(-1), and is then ...

Evaluation of Critical Speeds in High Speed Aircraft Tires

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1989
<div class="htmlview paragraph">By recasting the rolling tire system as a large deformation nonlinear eigenvalue problem, this paper develops a methodology capable of handling the critical speed/standing wave response. Based on a moderate/small deformation superposed on large finite element formulation, tangent properties are developed to enable ...

High speed railway track dynamic behavior near critical speed

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 2017
Abstract This study was performed on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor (NEC) at Kingston, Rhode Island where is known as the Great Swamp and requires more frequent track maintenance. It was suspected that the so-called “critical speed” condition might exist at this particular location.

Critical Speed for Floppy Disks

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1998
This paper uses Lyapunov’s method to determine the critical speed of a flexible spinning disk enclosed in a housing that hydrodynamically couples the transverse motion of the disk to the motion of the thin films of air surrounding the disk. Depending on the clamping ratio, this critical speed is three to ten times higher than the critical speed in the ...

Critical Speed Control of a Solar Car

Optimization and Engineering, 2002
The following optimal control problem is presented: The World Solar Challenge is a 3000 km race for solar powered cars across the Australian continent from Darwin to Adelaide. Each car is powered by a panel of photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into electrical power.

Critical speeds in powder rolling

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics, 1978
1. It is confirmed that the “fluidization” phenomenon should be taken into account in calculations of the upper critical and maximum rolling speeds of powders. 2. Calculations of the upper critical rolling speeds of powders should be made with allowance for the fact that during rolling air expulsion from the region of deformation in the ...
