Increasingly software can be considered to be critical, due to the business or other functionality which it supports. Upgrades or changes to such software are expensive and risky, primarily because the software has not been designed and built for ease of change.

Addressing criticality levels in critical infrastructure system
2009 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, 2009Modern society depends on the operations of critical infrastructure system (CIs), such as transportation, energy, telecommunications, and water. Characterized by direct and transitive interdependencies, these systems have become so interconnected that disruption of one may lead to disruptions in all.

2.1 THAT THE SYSTEM ADDRESSES THE CORRECT PROBLEM. For example, imagine a system whose goal is to prevent people who intend to perform terrorist acts from boarding an aircraft. One could design a system which uses biometric technology to identify passengers before they board the aircraft.

The complex nature of the system of systems engineering (SoSE) field and problems it addresses amplifies the need for effective enquiry. Enquiry serves to invoke higher level thinking that can better ground exploration of SoSE problems. Effective enquiry for SoSE practice is an essential first act in any SoSE endeavour and serves to frame all that ...

Predictability in Mixed-Criticality Systems
2018 IEEE 24th International Conference on Embedded and Real-Time Computing Systems and Applications (RTCSA), 2018In this paper, we revisit and refine our previous research on schedulability testing for fixed set of dual-critical jobs. Such systems can be tested for tight job termination time bounds using simulation, under the prerequisite that the scheduling policy be predictable.
