Cronbach’s Coefficient Alpha

Organizational Research Methods, 2014
This study disproves the following six common misconceptions about coefficient alpha: (a) Alpha was first developed by Cronbach. (b) Alpha equals reliability. (c) A high value of alpha is an indication of internal consistency. (d) Reliability will always be improved by deleting items using “alpha if item deleted.” (e) Alpha should be greater than or ...

The impact of faking on Cronbach’s alpha for dichotomous and ordered rating scores

Quality & Quantity, 2013
In many psychological inventories (i.e., personnel selection surveys and diagnostic tests) the collected samples often include fraudulent records. This confronts the researcher with the crucial problem of biases yielded by the usage of standard statistical models.

Testing hypotheses involving Cronbach's alpha using marginal models

British Journal of Mathematical and Statistical Psychology, 2013
We discuss the statistical testing of three relevant hypotheses involving Cronbach's alpha: one where alpha equals a particular criterion; a second testing the equality of two alpha coefficients for independent samples; and a third testing the equality of two alpha coefficients for dependent samples.

Cronbach's Alpha: Review of Limitations and Associated Recommendations

Journal of Psychology in Africa, 2010
This paper discusses the limitations of Cronbach's alpha as a sole index of reliability, showing how Cronbach's alpha is analytically handicapped to capture important measurement errors and scale dimensionality, and how it is not invariant under variations of scale length, interitem correlation, and sample characteristics.

On the sensitivity of Cronbach's alpha to fake data

2011
In this paper, we address the problem of evaluating Cronbach’s alpha (Cronbach[1]) when fake data are considered. Starting from the introduction of an integrated simulation approach, called MC+SGR, we evaluate the sensitivity of alpha to two relevant scenarios of perturbation: symmetric faking and asymmetric faking.
