Genome-Wide Expression and Alternative Splicing in Domesticated Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.) under Flooding Stress

open access: yesAgronomy, 2021
Approximately 10% of agricultural land is subject to periodic flooding, which reduces the growth, survivorship, and yield of most crops, reinforcing the need to understand and enhance flooding resistance in our crops. Here, we generated RNA-Seq data from

Effects of the second crop on maize yield and yield components in organic agriculture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The second crop use in organic agriculture is a known method of maintaining the soil tilth, soil protection against environmental deterioration, soil nutrients conservation and even the weed control.

Crop biotechnology: prospects and opportunities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
SUMMARYThis paper is a brief review summarizing some of the important areas of activity in crop biotechnology likely to be exploited over the medium term (10–20 years), with an emphasis on agronomic traits.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

CRISPR/Cas Technology Revolutionizes Crop Breeding

open access: yesPlants, 2023
Crop breeding is an important global strategy to meet sustainable food demand. CRISPR/Cas is a most promising gene-editing technology for rapid and precise generation of novel germplasm and promoting the development of a series of new breeding techniques,

Effects of sowing measures on weeds and yield of organically grown wheat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Weed control by harrowing is an essential measure in organically grown cereals, but it is also known to be less effective against perennial weeds. Such problems might be solved by using a more effective hoeing which needs wider row spaces.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

A critical review of the impacts of cover crops on nitrogen leaching, net greenhouse gas balance and crop productivity

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, 2019
Cover crops play an increasingly important role in improving soil quality, reducing agricultural inputs and improving environmental sustainability. The main objectives of this critical global review and systematic analysis were to assess cover crop ...

Designing crop rotations in organic and low-input agriculture: Evaluation of pre-crop effects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this overview, the preceding effects of crop pairs are classified by establishing schematic diagrams for use in crop rotation planning in low external input or organic agricultural systems.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
