Abstract This paper reports the results of work carried out to determine the characteristics of the residues of important agricultural crops in North India. Density, equilibrium moisture content, higher calorific value and the results of chemical, proximate, elemental and thermogravimetric analyses of the crop residues are reported and discussed.

In less affluent countries such as those in South and Southeast Asia, grain is directly used for human consumption, and crop residues are the main source of fodder for animals. In addition, crop residues have several other uses (Table 1). Crop residues are certainly an asset in these countries and seldom are left in the field.
