The use of mixed species cropping to manage pests and diseases – theory and practice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This paper was presented at the UK organic research 2002 on behalf of colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). Mixed species cropping is often perceived as a viable tool to increase on-farm biodiversity in organic agriculture and is a potentially ...

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Potential of Pseudomonas and Trichoderma from the Brazilian Amazon as Biocontrol Agents against the Wheat Blast Disease

open access: yesAgronomy, 2022
Blast is one of the most significant wheat diseases, causing high yield losses in susceptible varieties under favorable conditions in Latin America, Southeastern Asia and Eastern Africa.

Substrate Stress Relaxation Regulates Cell‐Mediated Assembly of Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Silicone‐based viscoelastic substrates with tunable stress relaxation reveal how matrix mechanics regulates cellular mechanosensing and cell‐mediated matrix remodelling in the stiff regime. High stress relaxation promotes assembly of fibronectin fibril‐like structures, increased nuclear localization of YAP and formation of β1 integrin‐enriched ...

Continuous‐Flow Photocatalytic Degradation of Glyphosate and Aminomethylphosphonic Acid Under Simulated Sunlight with TiO2‐Coated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Membrane

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Glyphosate (GLY) and its primary metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), are photodegraded using a poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane with immobilized titanium dioxide (PVDF‐TiO2) in a continuous flow‐through operation under solar light. At optimized conditions, the PVDF‐TiO2 membrane achieved 95% GLY and 80% AMPA removal with •O2− as the ...

A field study on the effect of organic soil conditioners with different placements on dry matter and yield of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Recycling of Organic Waste in Agriculture, 2018
Purpose Four different types of composts were assessed in two methods of application for their potential to support organic tomato yield. Methods A 2-year experiment was conducted using four different soil conditioners: cow manure (CM), household compost

Extending the CSM-CERES-Beet Model to Simulate Impact of Observed Leaf Disease Damage on Sugar Beet Yield

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
A CSM-CERES-Beet pest damage routine was modified to simulate the impact of Cercospora leaf spot disease effects on sugar beet yield. Foliar disease effects on sugar beet growth and yield were incorporated as daily damage to leaf area and photosynthesis,

Near‐Infrared Organic Photovoltaic Electrodes for Subretinal Neurostimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Organic photovoltaic electrodes based on the D18:Y6 blend enable precise and light‐controlled activation of retinal ganglion cells in a degenerating retina. NIR Light‐driven activation of retinal ganglion cells, tunable stimulation parameters, and biocompatibility with human retinal organoids highlight their potential for next‐generation prosthetics ...

Photonic Engineering Enables All‐Passive Upconversion Imaging with Low‐Intensity Near‐Infrared Light

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A passive upconversion imaging system enables the observation of scenes illuminated by low‐intensity incoherent near‐infrared light from 750 to 930 nm, by converting it into the visible without the use of external power. The upconverter is enabled by triplet–triplet annihilation in a bulk heterojunction, with absorption enhanced by plasmonic resonators

A Vascular Microphysiological Model of Lung Fibrosis Reveals That Myofibroblasts and IPF Patient‐Derived Fibroblasts Impair Angiogenesis and Vasculogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A microphysiological lung fibrosis model recapitulates myofibroblast–vascular interactions. Induced myofibroblasts and patient‐derived IPF fibroblasts impair angiogenesis and increase vascular permeability via TGF‐β1–driven signaling. Pharmacological interventions with SB 431542 and VEGF supplementation restore vascular morphology and barrier function.
