Retrieval evidence of impingement at the third articulation in contemporary dual mobility cups for total hip arthroplasty [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
PURPOSE: We aimed to assess polyethylene liners of retrieved hips of one design of a dual mobility (DM) cup liner and two designs of femoral stems to better understand the role of femoral stem design on polyethylene impingement.

Unleashing the Power of Machine Learning in Nanomedicine Formulation Development

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A random forest machine learning model is able to make predictions on nanoparticle attributes of different nanomedicines (i.e. lipid nanoparticles, liposomes, or PLGA nanoparticles) based on microfluidic formulation parameters. Machine learning models are based on a database of nanoparticle formulations, and models are able to generate unique solutions

Evaluation of the onset of space charge and electroluminescence as a marker for cross linked polyethylene ageing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The aim of the “ARTEMIS” project is to investigate the ageing mechanisms for cross-linked polyethylene under thermo-electrical stress and to identify ageing markers, which can be used to carry out diagnostic procedures.

Actuating and Sensing Composites of Liquid Crystal Elastomers and Poly(ionic liquid)s

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic conductive, mechanically tough, flexible, and stretchable filaments of a composite material comprising a liquid crystal elastomer and a poly(ionic liquid) are produced through 3D printing, which exhibit large actuation strain under stimulation and electrical resistance variation in response to deformation or environmental condition changes. Their

Fracture of Dual-Mobility Polyethylene Liner in a Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty: A New Complication to a Modern Design: A Case Report

open access: yesArthroplasty Today
We present the first documented case of polyethylene liner fracture in a primary dual-mobility cup (DMC) total hip arthroplasty leading to intraprosthetic dislocation.

Comparison of stabilization by Vitamin E and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenols during polyethylene radio-thermal-oxidation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper reports a compilation of data for PE+Vitamin E and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenols oxidation in radio-thermal ageing. Data unambiguously show that Vitamin E reacts with P° and POO° whereas 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenols only react with POO°.

From Clinic to Computation: Multiscale Bioengineering Strategies for Durable Biological Aortic Valve Replacements

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioprosthetic aortic valves have revolutionized the treatment of aortic stenosis, but their durability is limited by structural valve deterioration (SVD). This review focuses on the pericardial tissue at the heart of these valves, examining how its mechanical properties and calcification drive fatigue and failure.
