Evaluation of Potato virus X mild mutants for cross protection against severe infection in China

open access: yesVirology Journal, 2019
Cross protection is a promising alternative to control plant viral diseases. One critical factor limiting the application of cross protection is the availability of attenuated mutants or mild strains.

Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

Intranasal vaccination with M2e5x virus-like particles induces humoral and cellular immune responses conferring cross-protection against heterosubtypic influenza viruses

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Current influenza vaccines do not provide broad cross-protection. Here, we report that intranasal vaccination with virus-like particles containing the highly conserved multiple ectodomains of matrix protein 2 (M2e5x VLP) of influenza virus induces broad ...

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Exploring the Relationship between Business Elite Networks and Redistributive Social Policies in Latin American Countries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Although the cohesion of business elites has been associated with income concentration and regressive policies, few studies have investigated in depth the role of business elite networks in macrosocial issues such as redistributive social policies.

Bivalent Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Effectiveness in a Japanese Population: High Vaccine-Type–Specific Effectiveness and Evidence of Cross-Protection

open access: yesJournal of Infectious Diseases, 2018
Background Proactive recommendations for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in Japan have been suspended for 5 years because of safety concerns. While no scientific evidence exists to substantiate these concerns, one reason given for not reinstating ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Partial cross-protection between Japanese encephalitis virus genotype I and III in mice

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2019
Genotype III (GIII) Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) predominance has gradually been replaced by genotype I (GI) over the last 20 years in many Asian countries.

Adaptaquin is selectively toxic to glioma stem cells through disruption of iron and cholesterol metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Adaptaquin selectively kills glioma stem cells while sparing differentiated brain cells. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses show Adaptaquin disrupts iron and cholesterol homeostasis, with iron chelation amplifying cytotoxicity via cholesterol depletion, mitochondrial dysfunction, and elevated reactive oxygen species.

Bivalent Vaccine Effectiveness Against Type-Specific HPV Positivity: Evidence for Cross-Protection Against Oncogenic Types Among Dutch STI Clinic Visitors

open access: yesJournal of Infectious Diseases, 2017
In this cross-sectional study among vaccine-eligible female sexually transmitted infection clinic visitors, high vaccine effectiveness of the bivalent vaccine against the vaccine types HPV-16/18 was demonstrated and significant cross-protection against ...
