Cerebellar abiotrophy in crossbred cattle

Australian Veterinary Journal, 1989
Cerebellar abiotrophy affected 9 of 74 calves sired by a Poll Hereford bull over 2 successive calving seasons. The disease was characterised by episodes of recumbency and ataxia, with hypermetria and wide base stance. Clinical signs commenced between birth and 8 months of age. Two calves which were affected first at 8 months of age recovered clinically

Maximizing genetic response in crossbreds using both purebred and crossbred information

Animal Science, 1994
AbstractA combined crossbred and purebred selection (CCPS) method, i.e. using crossbred and purebred information, was proposed to achieve genetic response in crossbred animals. Selection index theory was applied to establish a CCPS index. The CCPS was compared with pure-line selection (PLS) and crossbred selection (CS) methods.

The Crossbred Sire: Theory

Journal of Animal Science, 1987
Favorable effects of heterosis on performance of the crossbred market animal and the crossbred dam have been well documented and breeding plans have been developed to utilize these effects. However, a similar mandate for use of the crossbred sire does not exist.

Ascertaining the paternal lineage in crossbred calves

Journal of Genetics, 2020
Karyotyping is one among the culling parameter used for taking up culling decisions. Cytogenetic screening of breeding bulls has been recommended to screen for chromosomal abnormalities before semen production in artificial insemination. The chromosomal analysis of a Holstein Friesian crossbred bull revealed the presence of acrocentric Y-chromosome ...

Calf mortality in crossbred dairy cattle

Tropical Animal Health and Production, 1980
Information is given on crossbred calves between birth and 6 months of age belonging to 6 genetic groups--3 with 50% inheritance from Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss and the other 3 with 75% inheritance from 1 or 2 temperature dairy breeds. The mortality rate in 1,059 calves born was 3.87, 2.84 and 1.22% respectively under 1 month, from 1 to 3 and ...

Joint evaluation of purebreds and crossbreds in swine

Journal of Animal Science, 2002
Data from two purebred swine lines A (n = 6,022) and B (n = 24,170), and their reciprocal, cross C (n = 6,135), were used to examine gains in reliability of combined purebred and crossbred evaluation over conventional within-line evaluations using crossbred and pureline models. Random effects in the pureline model included additive, parental dominance,

The Crossbred Sire: Experimental Results for Cattle

Journal of Animal Science, 1987
Results comparing crossbred bulls relative to straightbred bulls for various reproduction traits (such as puberty, sperm concentration, pregnancy rate and weaning rate) and progeny growth traits (birth and weaning weight) were summarized separately for Bos taurus X Bos taurus (Bt X Bt) and Bos indicus X Bos taurus (Bi X Bt) crosses.
