Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Crossing Over: Sustainability, New Urbanism, and Gentrification in Austin, Texas

open access: yesSouthern Spaces, 2015
In this essay, Andrew M. Busch discusses the histories of segregation and gentrification in Austin, Texas's Eastside and examines the rise of New Urbanism in the development of the Eastside's Eleventh Street corridor.

Stabilizing quantum metastable states in a time-periodic potential

open access: yes, 2005
Metastability of a particle trapped in a well with a time-periodically oscillating barrier is studied in the Floquet formalism. It is shown that the oscillating barrier causes the system to decay faster in general.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Asexual Recombination in a uvsH Mutant of Aspergillus nidulans

open access: yesBiological Research, 2007
Mutations in the gene uvsH of Aspergillus nidulans result in increased spontaneous chromosome instability and increased intragenic and intergenic mitotic recombination in homozygous diploids.

Transport in quasiperiodic interacting systems: from superdiffusion to subdiffusion

open access: yes, 2017
Using a combination of numerically exact and renormalization-group techniques we study the nonequilibrium transport of electrons in an one-dimensional interacting system subject to a quasiperiodic potential.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Highways, crossing structures and risk: Behaviors of Greater Yellowstone pronghorn elucidate efficacy of road mitigation

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2018
Wildlife crossing structures and accompanying barrier fencing can prevent large mammals from accessing road surfaces and can significantly reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions while allowing animals to move from one side of the road to the other.

Pedestrians’ crossing behaviour in south-western Nigeria [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Geographies: Journal of Studies and Research in Human Geography, 2018
This study examined the pedestrians’ safe and unsafe behaviour before and during street crossing in three cities in South Western Nigeria. 1,214 pedestrians were observed at crossing sites using direct observation approach.

Thermally activated barrier crossing and stochastic resonance of a flexible polymer chain in a piecewise linear bistable potential

open access: yes, 2010
We study the stochastic resonance (SR) of a flexible polymer chain crossing over a piecewise linear bistable potential. The dependence of signal to noise ratio $SNR$ on noise intensity $D$, coupling constant $k$ and polymer length $N$ is studied via two ...
