Laser-Doppler measurement of crosswind velocity
Applied Optics, 1982There is a need for the remote sensing of local wind velocities over distances of hundreds of meters, and laser-Doppler anemometry (LDA) has been suggested as a suitable measuring technique. In this paper the major features of an LDA system optimized for crosswind velocity measurements are presented. Computer programs based on Mie scattering theory are

Bifurcation of volcanic plumes in a crosswind
Bulletin of Volcanology, 1994Bent-over buoyant jets distorted by a crosscurrent develop a vortex pair structure and can bifurcate to produce two distinct lobes which diverge from one another downwind. The region downwind of the source between the lobes has relatively low proportions of discharged fluid.

Crosswind Feedforward Control – A Measure to Improve Vehicle Crosswind Behaviour
Vehicle System Dynamics, 1994SUMMARY The theory of crosswind feedforward control was explained using the example of a vehicle with active front-wheel steering. Beforehand, the calculation formulas and frequency responses of the transient crosswind force and of the wind yaw moment acting on the vehicle were derived using the example of a simple vehicle fluid model. The influence of

Coherent lidar crosswind sensing
SPIE Proceedings, 1998Range-resolved crosswind measurements are required for improved ballistics accuracy in a variety of planetary boundary layer applications. In these environments, the effects wind turbulence can cause large errors in estimates derived using conventional Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) lidar techniques.

Caught in the Crosswinds of the Atlantic
Journalism History, 2011John Brown Russwurm (1799-1851), Freedoms Journal, and African Colonization This article reassesses the career at Freedom's Journal of John B. Russwurm, co-founder of America's first black newspaper in New York City. Rather than being a convert to emigrationism, he counted among his long-term associates several who were actively engaged in promoting ...

A comparison of scintillation crosswind methods
IGARSS '96. 1996 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2002Shimmering of distant objects on a hot day or the twinkling of stars is familiar to most people. These visual effects, known as scintillation, are caused by the drift of refractive-index irregularities in the atmosphere. Analysis of scintillation phenomena provide a method for remotely sensing the atmosphere, since this effect is related to turbulence ...

Noise Characteristics of a Turbulent Crosswind Jet
AIAA Journal, 1974The turbulent flow which results when a circular jet issues into a crosswind is a noise source which is encountered during take-off and landing of certain types of V/STOL aircraft. The acoustic intensity of the noise from this flow is calculated by extending the freejet model of Ribner 1'2 to those crosswind jets for which the ratio of jet velocity to ...

The driver as a sensor for crosswind sensitivity
ATZ worldwide, 2002There are currently no standardized criteria for evaluating a vehicle’s crosswind behaviour. The application of conventional criteria to some vehicles results in different — and in some cases even contradictory — evaluations. The Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS) of Stuttgart University is developing an ...
