Turbulent plumes in a uniform crosswind

open access: yes, 2020
Direct numerical simulation is used to investigate the integral behaviour of buoyant plumes subjected to a uniform crosswind. We find that the plume centreline is not aligned with the streamlines as is commonly assumed in integral plume models. Instead, the centreline is aligned with the total buoyancy flux, which implies that a model for the vertical ...

Mitigating crosswind response of a high-speed train passing the end of windbreak walls

open access: yesAdvances in Wind Engineering
The sudden change in wind speed at the end of a windbreak wall poses a significant threat to train safety, as it amplifies train’s responses. This study aims to investigate countermeasures to reduce the maximum unsteady crosswind response of high-speed ...

Nonlinear Simulation of Terminal Maneuvers Including Landing Gear Dynamics, Crosswind and Ground Effect

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Terminal flight phases, particularly landing, are among the most critical, due to low altitude, low speed and the possible presence of crosswinds. Tools capable of accurately modeling and simulating these phases are essential for identifying potential ...

Transient CFD Study of Aerodynamic Interaction Between Heavy-Duty Trucks During Highway Merging and Platoon Formation Under Crosswind

open access: yesFluids
Highway merging and platoon formation are critical scenarios in heavy-duty vehicle aerodynamics. This study presents a transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of two trucks undergoing a merging maneuver and subsequent platoon formation.

Power Limit of Crosswind Kites

open access: yes, 2019
In this paper, a generalized power limit of the cross wind kite energy systems is proposed. Based on the passivity property of the aerodynamic force, the available power which can be harvested by a cross wind kite is derived. For the small side slip angle case, an analytic result is calculated.

Assessment of crosswind performance of buses

open access: yes, 2009
When driving a vehicle on the road, the driver has to compensate continuously for small directional deviations from the desired course due to disturbances such as crosswinds, road irregularities and unintended driver inputs. These types of deviations have a tiring effect on the driver and should therefore be minimised.
