Cellular Automata for Crowd Dynamics
2014Cellular Automata (CA) as bio-inspired parallel computational models of self-reproducing organisms can capture the essential features of systems where global behavior arises from the collective effect of simple components which interact locally. In this aspect, CAs have been considered as a fine candidate to model pedestrian behavior and crowd dynamics

Dynamic response and hydrodynamics of polarized crowds
Science, 2019A crowd that flows like water The behavior of large numbers of insects, animals, and other flocks is often based on rules about individual interactions. Bain and Bartolo applied a fluid-like model to the behavior of marathon runners as they walked up to the start line of the Chicago Marathon (see the Perspective by Ouellette).

GEOMETRICAL AND TOPOLOGICAL DUALITY IN CROWD DYNAMICS
International Journal of Biomathematics, 2010The purpose of this paper is to establish strong theoretical basis for solving practical problems in modeling the behavior of crowds. Based on the previously developed (entropic) geometrical model of crowd behavior dynamics, in this paper we formulate two duality theorems related to the crowd manifold.

Crowd dynamics: a paradigm for simulating and predicting crowd behavior
SPIE Proceedings, 2004A modeling technique is presented that encapsulates the behavior of a crowd that may or may not become hostile. The various parameters such a slogans shouted, grouping, density, age, occasion, leadership, etc. among many other factors can easily be estimated and submitted to the model.

The impact of cultural differences on crowd dynamics
International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems, 2012Accurate models of crowd dynamics are an important challenge for agent-based social simulations. Unfortunately, existing models of physical crowds do not yet account for cultural factors. In this extended abstract, we briefly summarize our results in treating culture as a first-class object in models of physical crowds.

Understanding crowd dynamics in densely populated public spaces, such as city centers, stadiums, and transit hubs, is vital for ensuring public safety and efficient management. The complexities of crowded environments introduce various challenges, including traffic congestion, overcrowding, and potential safety hazards.

Multiscale Crowd Dynamics Modeling and Theory
2014This chapter deals with models of living complex systems, chiefly human crowds, by methods of conservation laws and measure theory. We introduce a modeling framework which enables one to address both discrete and continuous dynamical systems in a unified manner using common phenomenological ideas and mathematical tools as well as to couple these two ...

Sliding Mode Control of Crowd Dynamics
IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 2013In this paper, the design of nonlinear sliding mode controllers for models representing crowd dynamics in one dimension is presented. The main contribution of this paper is the stability analysis and robust control synthesis of hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) system models using the sliding mode method.
