Recent Advancements in the Characterization of D‐Amino Acid and Isoaspartate Post‐Translational Modifications

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT One of the great triumphs of mass spectrometry‐based peptide and protein characterization is the characterization of their modifications as most modifications have a characteristic mass shift. What happens when the modification does not change the mass of the peptide?

Warming winters promote biodiversity through reduced mortality of a habitat‐forming species in soft‐sediment intertidal systems

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Habitat‐forming species enhance biodiversity by providing shelter, substrate and feeding grounds for many species. Climate‐change effects on these species may have wide ranging impacts on local species richness and abundance. Warmer winter temperatures in particular are an important driver of demographic parameters in temperate to polar environments ...

Prey selection and growth in 0+ Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis L. in littoral zones of seven temperate lakes

open access: yesEcology of Freshwater Fish, Volume 32, Issue 1, Page 37-52, January 2023., 2023
Abstract We studied the relationships between the planktonic food base and feeding patterns of juvenile mid‐summer/early autumn Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis L., a common predatory freshwater fish in large parts of Europe and Asia. The feeding of 0+ perch was studied during summer and autumn in littoral habitats of seven lakes with different ...

Three's a crowd: The relationship among endoparasites, an epibiont and their Daphnia host

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
In freshwater communities, organisms interact in a variety of ways, including predation, competition and parasitism. Parasites are ubiquitous, playing an important role in shaping freshwater communities. Endoparasites live within internal organs of their host, while ectoparasites, also known as epibionts, are confined to the external part of the host's

Macroevolutionary patterns in marine hermaphroditism

open access: yesEvolution, Volume 76, Issue 12, Page 3014-3025, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Most plants and many animals are hermaphroditic; whether the same forces are responsible for hermaphroditism in both groups is unclear. The well‐established drivers of hermaphroditism in plants (e.g., seed dispersal potential, pollination mode) have analogues in animals (e.g., larval dispersal potential, fertilization mode), allowing us to ...

Efficient Production and Isolation of 3‐Acetamido‐5‐Acetylfuran from N‐Acetyl‐D‐Glucosamine within Protic Ionic Liquids

open access: yesChemistryOpen, EarlyView.
This paper presents a facile method for the conversion of N‐acetylglucosamine (NAG) to 3‐acetamido‐5‐acetylfuran (3A5AF), a potential platform chemical, within protic ionic liquid systems. Reaction optimization, 3A5AF isolation, green metrics and the recyclability and scalability of selected systems are discussed.
