Evolutionary Dynamics of Cryptophyte Plastid Genomes [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Biology and Evolution, 2017
Cryptophytes are an ecologically important group of largely photosynthetic unicellular eukaryotes. This lineage is of great interest to evolutionary biologists because their plastids are of red algal secondary endosymbiotic origin and the host cell retains four different genomes (host nuclear, mitochondrial, plastid, and red algal nucleomorph).

Rhodopsin-Mediated Photoreception in Cryptophyte Flagellates [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2005
We show that phototaxis in cryptophytes is likely mediated by a two-rhodopsin-based photosensory mechanism similar to that recently demonstrated in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and for the first time, to our knowledge, report spectroscopic and charge movement properties of cryptophyte algal rhodopsins.

Protein Targeting into the Complex Plastid of Cryptophytes [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Molecular Evolution, 2006
The cryptophyte Guillardia theta harbors a plastid surrounded by four membranes. This turns protein targeting of nucleus-encoded endosymbiont localized proteins into quite a challenge, as the respective precursors have to pass either all four membranes to reach the plastid stroma or only the outermost two membranes to enter the periplastidal ...

Complicated family relationships, or about taxonomic problems in the family Pyrenomonadaceae (Cryptophyceae)

open access: yesOceanological and Hydrobiological Studies, 2023
Cryptophytes, to which the Pyrenomonadaceae family belongs, are interesting organisms that occur almost all over the world and they are an important element of trophic chains in many ecosystems.

Phytoplankton dynamics in nearshore regions of the western Antarctic Peninsula in relation to a variable frontal zone in the Gerlache Strait

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Gerlache Strait is a narrow channel that separates the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) from the Palmer Archipelago. This area is characterized by the presence of interconnected fjords, bays, islands, and channels that serve as a refuge

Notes on the Cultivation of Two Mixotrophic Dinophysis Species and Their Ciliate Prey Mesodinium rubrum

open access: yesToxins, 2018
Kleptoplastic mixotrophic species of the genus Dinophysis are cultured by feeding with the ciliate Mesodinium rubrum, itself a kleptoplastic mixotroph, that in turn feeds on cryptophytes of the Teleaulax/Plagioselmis/Geminigera (TPG) clade.

Inferred Subcellular Localization of Peroxisomal Matrix Proteins of Guillardia theta Suggests an Important Role of Peroxisomes in Cryptophytes

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2022
Peroxisomes participate in several important metabolic processes in eukaryotic cells, such as the detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or the degradation of fatty acids by β-oxidation.

High Grazing Rates on Cryptophyte Algae in Chesapeake Bay

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
Cryptophyte algae are globally distributed photosynthetic flagellates found in freshwater, estuarine, and neritic ecosystems. While cryptophytes can be highly abundant and are consumed by a wide variety of protistan predators, few studies have sought to ...
