All magmas transition through a crystal mush stage during solidification, and long-lived crystal mushes are thought to be common in crustal magmatic systems. The efficacy of many crystal mush processes depends primarily on the permeability and porosity of the mush, and thus on the shape and size of crystals in the mush framework.

Continuous mixing of crystal mush and replenished magma in the ongoing Unzen eruption
Geology, 1995Zoning profiles of magnetite phenocrysts in the successively effused dacite of the ongoing Unzen eruption from 1991 wereanalyzed to estimate the time scale of magma mixing. The dacite was formed by mixing of relatively high- and low-temperature ( T ) end-member magmas.

Longevity and crystal mush stability of the IDDP-1 magma body at Krafla
The 2009 intersection of molten rhyolitic magma at ~2.1 km depth by the IDDP-1 well revealed an active shallow magmatic system - shallower than initially believed - beneath the Krafla caldera (NE Iceland), challenging the prevailing assumption that shallow bodies should rapidly solidify.Gabriel Girela Arjona +3 more
