Elderly patients with preoperative hypoalbuminemia (< 40 g/L) undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass were randomized to receive 100 mL of 20% albumin or saline before surgery. Albumin infusion reduced the severity and incidence of PPCs and modulated immune balance.
