Ctenophora

2017
This chapter describes the taxonomy of ctenophores. The ctenophores, or comb jellies, are gelatinous metazoans belonging to a small and entirely marine phylum of about 150 species. They are mostly planktonic, with the exception of the benthic order Platyctenida, where only the larvae are planktonic.

Gap Junctions in Ctenophora

Gap junction proteins form specialized intercellular communication channels, including electrical synapses, that regulate cellular metabolism and signaling. We present a molecular inventory of the gap junction proteins-innexins (INX-like) in ctenophores, focusing on two reference species, Pleurobrachia bachei and Mnemiopsis leidyi.

Brief History of Ctenophora

Ctenophores are the descendants of the earliest surviving lineage of ancestral metazoans, predating the branch leading to sponges (Ctenophore-first phylogeny). Emerging genomic, ultrastructural, cellular, and systemic data indicate that virtually every aspect of ctenophore biology as well as ctenophore development are remarkably different from what is ...

Egg-laying in Ctenophora

Nature, 1954
WHILE occupied with field-work on Siphonophora, I placed six small Pleurobrachia sp. measuring about 2.5 mm. in length in a watch-glass at 1100 hr. on April 29. An hour later I noticed that eggs were being extruded through the ectoderm over the gastrovascular canals. Since the fertilization membrane was present as the eggs were being extruded, it would
