The flexible, the stereotyped and the in‐between: putting together the combinatory tool use origins hypothesis

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Tool use research has long made the distinction between tool using that is considered learned and flexible, and that which appears to be instinctive and stereotyped. However, animals with an inherited tool use specialisation can exhibit flexibility, while tool use that is spontaneously innovated can be limited in its expression and facilitated

Elucidating the Interplay Between Structure and Electrochemical Behavior in Lignin‐Based Polymer Electrolytes for Potassium Batteries

open access: yesBattery Energy, Volume 4, Issue 2, March 2025.
Three biobased membranes are synthesized by crosslinking oxidized Kraft lignin with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether of increasing molecular weights. After incorporation of solvated potassium salts, potassium batteries including these biobased gel polymer electrolytes are able to deliver a maximum specific capacity at 0.05 A g−1 as high as 130 ...

Regulating Interfacial Hydrogen‐Bonding Connectivity by Oxygen Vacancies‐Driven [Fe(CN)6]3− Coordination for Boosting Hydrogen Peroxide Electrosynthesis

open access: yesCarbon Energy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The inherent hydroxide‐rich (OH⁻) environment in alkaline media facilitates the two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e−ORR). However, the strong interaction between alkali metal cations and solvated water molecules significantly reduces the connectivity of the hydrogen bond network within the alkaline electric double layer, thereby ...

Shedding Light on Synthetic Autocatalysis: From Conventional Closed‐Shell Chemistries to Overlooked Open‐Shell Occurrences

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Why add another catalyst when the product itself holds the power to catalyze its own formation? Autocatalysis in synthetic chemistry enhances reaction efficiency and uncovers novel catalytic behavior across both closed‐shell and open‐shell systems, expanding reactivity and enabling innovative design strategies.

Tuning the Twist by Molecular Design: A New Strategy for Hexabenzocoronene‐Containing Helical Twistacene

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
An efficient Scholl–based strategy enables precise control of the C–C bond to access the first hexabenzocoronene–containing helical twistacene (NG2). The resulting nanographene shows pronounced helical distortion, high stability, enhanced solubility, and promising redox and optoelectronic properties.
