Boron suboxide: As hard as cubic boron nitride

Applied Physics Letters, 2002
The Vickers hardness of boron suboxide single crystals was measured using a diamond indentation method. Under a loading force of 0.98 N, our test gave an average Vickers hardness of 45 GPa. The average fracture toughness was measured as 4.5 MPa m1/2. We also measured the hardness of the cubic boron nitride and sapphire single crystals for comparison ...

The near edge structure of cubic boron nitride

Micron, 2012
We compare the near edge structure (NES) of cubic boron nitride (cBN) measured using both electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with that calculated using three commonly used theoretical approaches. The boron and nitrogen K-edges collected using EELS and XAS from cBN powder were found to be nearly identical ...

Title: Periodic Mesoporous Hexagonal Boron Nitride at High Pressure: A Route to Cubic Boron Nitride Nanocrystals and Mesoporous Cubic Boron Nitride

ChemistrySelect, 2017
Abstract Periodic mesoporous hexagonal boron nitride was investigated as a precursor for nanoscale forms of cubic boron nitride. Cubic boron nitride (c‐BN) nanocrystals were obtained at a pressure of 14 GPa and a temperature of 1300 °C.

Epitaxy of cubic boron nitride on (001)-oriented diamond

Nature Materials, 2003
Cubic boron nitride (c-BN), although offering a number of highly attractive properties comparable to diamond, like hardness, chemical inertness and a large electronic bandgap, up to now has not found the attention it deserves. This mostly has to do with preparational problems, with easy chemical routes not available and, instead, the necessity to apply

Transformation of Cubic Boron Nitride to a Graphitic Form of Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Nature, 1959
R. H. WENTORF1 has reported that a fragment of borazon (synthetic cubic boron nitride) was twice heated to over 2000°C. in vacuo without change. Dr. Wentorf was kind enough to supply us with some small specimens, both black and yellow. Some of these, which gave random-rotation X-ray photographs showing them to be twins (only two nearly single crystals ...

Melting of cubic boron nitride at extreme pressures

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 2012
Due to its large pressure range of stability and inert nature, cubic boron nitride has been proposed as a potential pressure standard for high pressure experiments. It is extremely refractive upon compression, although its melting temperature is not known beyond 10 GPa.

Cubic Phase of Boron Nitride by AES

Surface Science Spectra, 1992
Auger electron spectra of the cubic phase of boron nitride are presented. The line shapes of the boron and nitrogen KLL transitions are characteristic for this phase of boron nitride. Therefore, cubic-boron nitride can be distinguished from other phases of boron nitride based on Auger line shapes.

Lanthanide Doped Cubic Boron Nitride

MRS Proceedings, 2002
ABSTRACTFirst basic investigations on lanthanide implanted cubic boron nitride were performed with focus on the site of the implanted ions as well as their luminescence behaviour. In order to investigate the lattice sites of lanthanides in c-BN, we implanted single crystal c-BN with radioactive 139Ce ions using the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE at ...

Grinding with Cubic Boron Nitride

1974
Beginning with a comparison of various abrasives and their mechanisms of wear, the specific problems when grinding high-speed steel with cubic boron nitride cup wheels are discussed. The necessary truing and dressing of the grinding section before the first usage is given special attention, because these preparations have an important effect on ground ...

Preparation and characterization of cubic boron nitride and metal boron nitride films*

Surface and Interface Analysis, 1994
Abstract Boron nitride has generated much scientific interest due to the outstanding material properties of its cubic modification (c‐BN) which can be compared with those of diamond, and to its metal (M) boron nitride compounds (MBN) which have extraordinary mechanical properties such as high hardness and high elasticity.
