Artificial nest boxes increased nesting opportunities for birds when tailored to their ecological needs. More complex and heterogeneous landscapes with greater forest and shrub cover increased nest box use. Nest box placement height and management‐related factors also influenced their occupation.

The effect of Common Cuckoo parasitism on the annual productivity of a host population
Avian interspecific brood parasitism is an excellent system for studying coevolutionary processes in nature because brood parasites directly affect host reproductive success.

Host‐Specific Vocal Similarity in Fledgling Levaillant's Cuckoos and Babblers in West Africa
Young cuckoos can mimic host calls to gain care, but the extent of this similarity varies across hosts. Analysing fledgling begging calls across four host associations, we found that calls given during food transfer were broadly similar and did not match host calls, whereas cuckoos reared by their main West African host closely mimicked host begging ...

Why cuckoos remove host eggs: Biting eggs facilitates faster parasitic egg‐laying
Brood parasitism by cuckoos relies on manipulating hosts to raise their offspring and has evolved stunning adaptations to aid in their deception. The fact that cuckoos usually but not always, remove one or two host eggs while laying their eggs has been a

Intraspecific variation and sexual dimorphism in wing shape and size is common in winged insects. The exact patterns, however, differ among taxa and are related to the selection pressure acting on specific traits.

COEVOLUTION OF AN AVIAN HOST AND ITS PARASITIC CUCKOO [PDF]
We use a quantitative genetic model to examine the coevolution of host and cuckoo egg characters (termed "size" as a proxy for general appearance), host discrimination, and host and cuckoo population dynamics. A host decides whether to discard an egg using a comparison of the sizes of the eggs in her nest, which changes as host and cuckoo eggs evolve ...

Waterbirds play vital ecological roles in wetland ecosystems. This study reports variations for 34 species of waterbirds across study sites of Usangu Wetland abundance with distribution bias in rice farms. The waterbird population trend is declining because of habitat alteration and hunting hence conservation measures should be taken to enhance ...

An updated list of parasitic cuckoos and their hosts in China
Avian brood parasitism is a unique reproductive behavior in which parasitic birds depend on other species to incubate their eggs and raise their offspring. In China, there are 20 species of cuckoos in the family Cuculidae, order Cuculiformes, of which 17

Bird Interspecific Brood Parasitism Record in the Third Century
The phenomenon of interspecies brood parasitism, characterized by parasitic birds depositing their eggs within the nests of unrelated host species for subsequent hatching and rearing, represents a pivotal aspect of ornithological research, owing to its ...

Egg discrimination along a gradient of natural variation in eggshell coloration [PDF]
Accurate recognition of salient cues is critical for adaptive responses, but the underlying sensory and cognitive processes are often poorly understood. For example, hosts of avian brood parasites have long been assumed to reject foreign eggs from their ...
