Divergence of defensive cucurbitacins in independent Cucurbita pepo domestication events leads to differences in specialist herbivore preference.

Plant, Cell and Environment, 2020
Crop domestication and improvement often concurrently affect plant resistance to pests and production of secondary metabolites, creating challenges for isolating the ecological implications of selection for specific metabolites.

Nectary biology ofCucurbita pepo: ecophysiological aspects

Acta Botanica Neerlandica, 1996
SUMMARY Nectary structure, nectar secretion and composition and insect visits were studied in male and female flowers of Cucurbita pepo in which anthesis lasts only 6 hours. The nectaries of male and female flowers develop in the same way, with presecretory, secretory and postsecretory phases; the flowers are dimorphic with regard to the position ...

Different AT-rich satellite DNAs in Cucurbita pepo and Cucurbita maxima

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1986
The AT-rich highly repeated satellite DNA of Cucurbita pepo (zucchini) and Cucurbita maxima (pumpkin) were cloned and their DNA structure was investigated. DNA sequencing revealed that the repeat length of satellite DNA in Cucurbita pepo is 349-352 base pairs. The percentage of AT-base pairs is about 61%.

Do Cucurbita pepo Gourds Float Fishnets?

American Antiquity, 2004
Among the various pre-maize indigenous crops of eastern North America, Cucurbita pepo gourd is the most enigmatic.C. pepogourd remains have been found on mid-Holocene (8000–4000 B.P.) archaeological sites as far north and east as Maine. Their presumably extremely bitter flesh would have made the fruits inedible.
