Perceiving Southernness: Vowel categories and acoustic cues in Southernness ratings

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2020
Southern U.S. speech has been the focus of much sociophonetic work. In terms of vowel patterns, Southern speech is often characterized by the Southern Vowel Shift (SVS, involving shifts in /e/, /ɛ/, and /aɪ/), back vowel fronting, and changes in glide dynamics.

A subtle threat cue, heart rate variability, and cognitive performance

Psychophysiology, 2011
AbstractThis research was designed to extend the literature on heart rate variability (HRV) in cognitive performance contexts by examining whether a subtle threat cue (the color red) in a test environment influences HRV reactivity and whether HRV reactivity is associated with change in cognitive performance.

Rate of Apparent Magnification as a Cue to Distance: Laboratory Investigation

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1972
O s made judgments of the apparent rate of magnification of an approaching object as a cue to its distance. Os were separated into 2 groups of 20 on the basis of their relative field dependency. Os viewed a radially moving target which provided the sensation of movement in depth. 2 target sizes and 2 values of rate of movement were used.

Influence of Sexual Preference Cues on Rating Applicants for a Teaching Position

Psychological Reports, 1994
Subjects differentially evaluated one excellently qualified candidate for a teaching position in Grade 4 as a function of varied informal notes attached to an application. The three variations were heterosexually cued behaviors, homosexually cued behaviors, and no cues.

Age, Presentation Rate, and the Effectiveness of Structural and Semantic Recall Cues

Journal of Gerontology, 1983
To replicate the results of research on age-related differences in the effectiveness of structural and semantic memory cues, 18 young, 18 middle-aged, and 18 elderly adults recalled three 20-item lists aided by category labels, or the initial two letters of each word, or no cues.

The role of excitation-pattern cues and temporal cues in the frequency and modulation-rate discrimination of amplitude-modulated tones

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998
These experiments examine the influence of excitation-pattern cues and temporal-fine-structure cues on frequency difference limens (FDLs) measured as a function of duration. In the first three conditions, listeners were required to detect a change in carrier frequency from a baseline of 250 or 2000 Hz, for stimuli with half-amplitude durations ranging ...

Effects of acute nicotine administration on ratings of attractiveness of facial cues

Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 2009
It has been suggested that one mechanism by which nicotine may exert an influence over behavior is by enhancing the reinforcing properties of other stimuli. We therefore sought to test the hypothesis that nicotine enhances the hedonic impact of behaviors performed in the presence of nicotine, using ratings of facial attractiveness, as we considered ...

Understanding and Removing the Effects of Performance Cues on Behavioral Ratings

Journal of Business and Psychology, 2000
Previous research has demonstrated that performance information (e.g., prior supervisor ratings) can bias behavioral ratings. However, research has not fully explored the effects of performance cues on raters' memory. In addition, no studies have attempted to eliminate this performance cue effect.

Inhibition from part-list cues and rate of recall.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Subjects recalled words from studied lists for 10 min. in a free-recall situation or in the presence of other list or extralist words. The presence of both types of context words reduced recall relative to free recall, but list-word context had a greater inhibiting effect than extralist word context, and only the list-word context produced a lower rate
