Fiddler Crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Ocypodidae) From Coastal Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands: Species Descriptions and DNA Barcodes. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Twenty‐five taxa were collected during the surveys, while two more were noted from the literature and museum collections; five are new to Ecuador. DNA sequences for cytochrome c oxidase–subunit 1 were obtained for 27 operational taxonomic units with three morphologically indistinguishable cryptic or pseudo‐cryptic taxa were also revealed.

Assessing taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity of giant clams across the Indo‐Pacific for conservation prioritization

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 28, Issue 10, Page 2124-2138, October 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Giant clams are iconic bivalves known to serve numerous ecological roles contributing to the functioning of coral reef ecosystems. In the next decade, giant clams will continue to face critical anthropogenic pressures from over‐exploitation for their meat and shells, the aquarium trade and global warming that threaten the persistence of ...

Is Ocean Acidification Really a Threat to Marine Calcifiers? A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis of 980+ Studies Spanning Two Decades

open access: yesSmall, Volume 18, Issue 35, September 1, 2022., 2022
Marine calcifiers are widely believed to be impaired by ocean acidification, but this concept has been increasingly challenged by recent evidence. This systematic review and meta‐analysis of nearly 1000 studies reveal that many calcifiers are indeed more resistant to ocean acidification than initially thought, which can result from the positive effects

Allometry of Mexican hogfish (Bodianus diplotaenia) for predicting the body length of individuals from two pre‐Columbian sites in the Pearl Island archipelago (Panama)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Volume 32, Issue 3, Page 669-681, May/June 2022., 2022
Abstract The Mexican hogfish (Osteichthyes: Labridae, Bodianus diplotaenia Gill, 1862) is widely distributed throughout the tropical eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California to northern Peru, including all oceanic islands. Artisanal fishers occasionally capture it today and its remains are recovered at pre‐Columbian dwelling sites along the Pacific ...

The widely distributed, edible seaweeds in Peru, Chondracanthus chamissoi and Chondracanthus chamissoi f. glomeratus (Gigartinaceae, Rhodophyta), are morphologically diverse but not phylogenetically distinct

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 52, Issue 6, Page 1290-1311, December 2021., 2021
Abstract Chondracanthus chamissoi is part of the diet of coastal people from Peru and is exported dehydrated to Asian countries for direct consumption. Although it is considered endemic to Peru and Chile, its range has extended to distant regions, such as Korea, Japan, and France. Using morphological and molecular approaches, we examined specimens from

Experimental Verification of Cavity-Flow Wall Effects and Correction Rules [PDF]

open access: yes, 1970
This report is intended as a companion to Report No. E-111A.5, "Wall Efects in Cavity Flows", by Wu, Whitney and Lin. Some simple rules for the correction of wall effect are derived from that theoretical study.

Species complex diversification by host plant use in an herbivorous insect: The source of Puerto Rican cactus mealybug pest and implications for biological control

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 19, Page 10463-10480, October 2020., 2020
Hypogeococcus pungens is a species complex native to South America. Some of its members are cactophilic, and one of them has been reported as a pest threatening cactus diversity in the Caribbean and North America. Using a combination of genome‐wide SNPs and mtDNA, we found that the complex comprises at least five different species, each strongly ...

Resistance, resilience, and vulnerability of social‐ecological systems to hurricanes in Puerto Rico

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 11, Issue 10, October 2020., 2020
Abstract Subject to hurricane disturbance for millennia, natural ecosystems of Puerto Rico exhibit clear patterns of resistance (e.g., many tree species have little immediate storm‐related mortality) and resilience (e.g., leaf litterfall and stream chemistry returned to pre‐hurricane levels in as little as five years).

Application of the Lagrangian tracers model in Anegada Bay, Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
En el presente trabajo se ha realizado un experimento numérico utilizando un sistema de modelación hidrodinámico con trazadores lagrangianos para estudiar el transporte y circulación de partículas a partir de dos puntos de emisión.
