Modelling the influence of personality and culture on affect and enjoyment in multimedia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Affect is evoked through an intricate relationship between the characteristics of stimuli, individuals, and systems of perception. While affect is widely researched, few studies consider the combination of multimedia system characteristics and human ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

The characteristic time scale of cultural evolution

open access: yesPNAS Nexus
Abstract Numerous researchers from various disciplines have explored commonalities and divergences in the evolution of complex social formations. Here, we explore whether there is a “characteristic” time course for the evolution of social complexity in a handful of different geographic areas. Data from the Seshat: Global History Databank

Characteristics of human monocytes cultured in the Teflon culture bag. [PDF]

open access: yesImmunology, 1982
Blood monocytes from healthy volunteers were isolated by Ficoll-Isopaque centrifugation and cultured (together with lymphocytes) in medium 199 with 20% heat-inactivated newborn calf serum in a Teflon culture bag. Quantifiable data on survival showed that up to 21 days of culture, approximately 40% of the initial number of monocytes were still viable ...

Place effects on environmental views [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
How people respond to questions involving the environment depends partly on individual characteristics. Characteristics such as age, gender, education, and ideology constitute the well-studied social bases of environmental concern, which have been ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Cultural Isolation and Characteristics of the Blood Microbiome of Healthy Individuals

open access: yes, 2018
Background: On the analogy of the non-pathogenic microbiota found in oral cavity, skin and gastrointestinal tract, existence of blood microbiota was confirmed by DNA sequencing, but never deeply characterized.
