A Simple Parameterization for Detrainment in Shallow Cumulus

Monthly Weather Review, 2008
Abstract For a wide range of shallow cumulus convection cases, large-eddy simulation (LES) model results have been used to investigate lateral mixing as expressed by the fractional entrainment and fractional detrainment rates. It appears that the fractional entrainment rates show much less variation from hour to hour and case to case ...

Non-precipitating cumulus convection and its parameterization

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1973
AbstractThis paper discusses the thermodynamic transports of heat, liquid water and (briefly) water vapour by non‐precipitating cumulus convection. It is shown that because of the irreversible mixing between cloud and environment, there is a downward transport of enthalphy in the cumulus layer.

Parameterization of Trade-Cumulus Cloud Amounts

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1981
Abstract A scheme for parameterizing the fractional cloud coverage of trade cumuli is developed which gives the cloud cover in terms of the cloud-layer relative humidity and the liquid water content of the convective elements. This parameterization gives good agreement with cloud observations obtained during the Atlantic Trade-Wind Experiment, 1969 ...

A General Form of Kuo's Cumulus Parameterization

Monthly Weather Review, 1985
Abstract A formulation of Kuo's cumulus parameterization is described which satisfies arbitrary vertical profiles of apparent heat source (Q1) and apparent moisture sink (Q2). The approach requires little calculation, and for a given Q1 and Q2, contains only one parameter, the partitioning of available moisture between storage and precipitation.

A discussion of the parameterization of momentum exchange by cumulus convection

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1976
A parameterization scheme for the flux divergence of horizontal momentum produced by cumulus convection is developed. A simple approximation to close the scheme in the tropics is discussed. The parameterization is shown to be consistent with some observed features of the tropical general circulation.

Observational Constraints on Cumulus Parameterizations

1993
Observational tests of cumulus parameterizations are difficult. Since cumulus convection is generally embedded in a larger-scale flow pattern in which many feedbacks are acting, it is hard to tell what is causing what to happen. For those aspects of convection tightly embedded in feedback loops, the change in convective behavior caused by environmental

On convective entrainment in a mass flux cumulus parameterization

Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 2006
A new entrainment/detrainment formulation in the Tiedtke’s mass flux cumulus parameterization is discussed here. Apart from validating it with observations both in one and three dimensional cases, it is also evaluated in the light of the results from the original Tiedtke scheme and another mass flux scheme due to Emanuel.

On Parameterization of Turbulent Transport in Cumulus Clouds

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1975
Abstract A one-dimensional time-dependent cumulus model is developed and discussed. Data predicted by the model along with a bulk entrainment model are compared with a case study observation and Warner's mean profile of Q/QA. While a great deal of the discrepancy between observed and predicted data can he attributed to the transient nature of ...

Cumulus cloud population and its parameterization

pure and applied geophysics, 1975
The latent heat released by cumulus clouds is very important to the energies of many large-scale tropical disturbances. The number of cumulus clouds involved in these disturbances is usually very large. The collective effects of cumulus clouds must therefore be incorporated into a large-scale model in a parameterized fashion.

The Tropical Mixed Layer and Cumulus Parameterization

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1974
Abstract A model of the convectively driven mixed layer is used to interpret BOMEX Phase III data. It is concluded that the compensating downdrafts and the moisture transports due to trade cumulus must be included explicitly in any theory of the dynamics of the tropical mixed layer.
