Molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis of Echinococcus vogeli Rausch & Bernstein, 1972 from Cuniculus paca Linnaeus, 1766 consumed in extractive reserves in Acre, Brazil.

open access: yesParasitology Research
Hunting wild animals for consumption is a common practice in the Brazilian Amazon and contributes to the transmission of zoonotic diseases, including neotropical echinococcosis (NE), caused by Echinococcus vogeli and Echinococcus oligarthra.

Surviving in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation: Richness and Defaunation of Mammals in Priority‐Protected Areas of the Brazilian Midwest

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 50, Issue 7, July 2025.
We found rich and compositionally different assemblages of medium and large‐sized mammals in protected areas on the southern edge of Amazon. However, both have high rates of mammal defaunation. We argue that anthropogenic threats in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation are eroding large ungulate populations, especially peccaries.

Breeding seasonality in the lowland paca (Cuniculus paca) in Amazonia: interactions with rainfall, fruiting, and sustainable hunting

open access: yesJournal of Mammalogy, 2018
The resilience of a given species to hunting is conditioned by the effect of potential threats upon the more sensitive periods in its life history, such as when animals are breeding.

Diversidad, abundancia relativa y patrones de actividad de los mamíferos medianos y grandes, asociados a los bosques riparios del río Bita, Vichada, Colombia

open access: yesBiota Colombiana, 2018

Seasonality in Reproduction and Reproductive Physiology of Caviomorphs

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 55, Issue 3, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Animals experience seasonal fluctuations of photoperiod, food availability, temperature and precipitation. This affects their energy budget, often leading to seasonal reproduction. We review available literature and (re)‐analyse existing datasets on seasonal reproduction of South American caviomorph rodents that are characterised by long ...

Comparison between two types of diluents on the collection and preservation of lowland paca (Cuniculus paca) epididymal sperm

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of two diluents (coconut water powder and milk-based diluent) in preserving sperm of lowland paca. A total of seven animals were subjected to the method for recovering sperm directly from the tail of ...

Diversity and Activity Pattern of Terrestrial Mammal Species in Serra do Amolar, Brazilian Pantanal 巴西潘塔纳尔湿地阿莫拉尔山脉陆生哺乳动物物种的多样性及活动模式

open access: yesWildlife Letters, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 56-63, June 2025.
The Serra do Amolar, located in the Brazilian Pantanal, is a crucial but understudied area for biodiversity conservation. Through camera traps, we recorded 29 mammal species, including three rodent species documented for the first time in the area: Cavia aperea, Cuniculus paca, and Holochilus chacarius.

Tipos de espermatogonios en "Tepezcuintle" (Cuniculus paca). Estudio ultraestructural

open access: yes, 2016
Ultraestructural studies of different types of espermatogonia by thin section techniques and tranamission electron microscopy showed that Cuniculus paca has two types of Type A spermatogonia (A-0 and A-1).

New records of tepezcuincle (Cuniculus paca) in Puebla, Central Mexico Nuevos registros de tepezcuincle (Cuniculus paca) en Puebla, centro de México

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2012
The state of Puebla has little information about mammal presence and distribution. In a study to determine jaguar presence using camera traps and interviews, we obtained 16 new records of tepezcuincle (Cuniculus paca) in different vegetation types such ...

Age at sexual maturity, first parturition and reproductive senescence in wild lowland pacas (Cuniculus paca): Implications for harvest sustainability.

open access: yesAnimal Reproduction Science, 2019
Generation length (GL) of a mammal, calculated through the age at sexual maturity, first reproduction and reproductive senescence can be used to assess the capacity of a population of a species to withstand differing amounts of hunting pressure by humans
