Curly beam with programmable bistability
Bistable beams with prebuckled sinusoidal shape are prominently constructed into mechanical metamaterial unit cells with bi- and multi-stability. While the effects of boundary conditions and thickness on their bistability were more studied, few investigations have been focused on the effect of the beam shape. We systematically created new geometries by

A series of vancomycin‐antimicrobial peptide conjugates is synthesized and evaluated to identify the optimal combination. Vm‐MSI, selected from multiple candidates, exhibited potent activity against vancomycin‐resistant and Gram‐negative bacteria by disrupting membranes and inducing oxidative stress, thereby expanding vancomycin's antibacterial ...

Sequence‐Dependent Heterotypic Assemblies of Intrinsically Disordered Peptides
Two oppositely charged intrinsically disordered peptides (IDPs) coassemble into heterotypic nanofibers. Homochiral mixtures (L/L IDPs) form homogeneous, aligned bundles with the more positive IDP. Heterochiral mixtures (L/D IDPs) yield heterogeneous, twisted bundles as positive‐IDP content increases.

The A526V substitution, previously not recognised to affect the functionality of the EAL domain, downregulates the apparent catalytic activity of the PAS‐GGDEF‐EAL ZMO1055 phosphodiesterase and other GGDEF‐EAL proteins. Substitution of A526, which is conserved among homologues, with amino acids with longer aliphatic side chains than valine, reverts to ...

Understanding breakage in curly hair [PDF]
In 2005, the L'Oréal Institute for hair and skin research carried out a multiethnic study to investigate hair breakage in women residing in the U.S.A. In this study it was reported that a large percentage (96%) of the African-American respondents experience breakage.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (STm) causes gastroenteritis and can progress to reactive arthritis (ReA). STm forms biofilms in the gut that secrete the amyloid curli, which we previously demonstrated can trigger autoimmunity in mice. HLA-B27 is

Diversification of gene expression during formation of static submerged biofilms by Escherichia coli
Many bacteria primarily exist in nature as structured multicellular communities, so called biofilms. Biofilm formation is a highly regulated process that includes the transition from the motile planktonic to sessile biofilm lifestyle.
