Magnetorotational instability, current relaxation, and current-vortex sheet

Physics of Plasmas, 2013
The conjugate effect of current relaxation and of current-vortex sheet formation on the magnetorotational instability is explored in a conducting fluid. It is found that the relative amplification of the magnetic viscosity from marginal stability to the instability determined by the maximum growth rate is around 924% when resistive effects dominate ...

The current‐voltage relationship in auroral current sheets

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1987
The current‐voltage relation within narrow auroral current sheets is examined through the use of high‐resolution data from the high‐altitude Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite. The north‐south perpendicular electric field and the east‐west magnetic field are shown for three cases in which there are large amplitude, oppositely directed paired electric fields

Heliospheric current sheet structure

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1999
Recent progress regarding multiple spacecraft crossings of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) is reviewed and placed in the context of streamer belt and heliospheric plasma sheet structure. Historically, multiple crossings have been attributed to waves on the HCS surface. Mounting evidence, however, argues against that view.

Stratified Current Sheet During Plasma Sheet Thinning

2005
Abstract The current sheet structure during the plasma sheet compression is studied for a one-dimensional Harris-type current sheet. We find that a stratified structure embedded in a thick plasma sheet is formed by taking into account the non-MHD effect.

Boundaries and Current Sheets

2018
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theories have defined space plasma boundaries of large-scale structures through discontinuous macroscopic parameters such as density and temperature in the same way ordinary fluid boundaries are defined. However, space plasmas are coupled to electric E and magnetic B fields, and therefore the boundary requirements must also ...

The Double Current Sheet in Diffraction

Physical Review, 1947
The electromagnetic radiation from an aperture in a plane-conducting screen is identical with that which would exist if screen and aperture were replaced by a double current sheet fitting the aperture. The current density $i$ is equal and opposite in the two layers of the sheet and is determined by the original tangential electric field $E$ over the ...

Evolutionarity of current sheets

1994
The continuous MHD motion of a perfectly conducting medium is impossible in the zero point of a magnetic field, in which the electric field differs from zero. In the vicinity of this point the frozen-in condition breaks down and, in compliance with the statement of Syrovatskii (1971) (see Section 4.3; Chapter 12), the reconnecting current sheet (RCS ...

The Balance Sheet-Current

1983
A balance sheet represents the position at one particular moment. Some aspects can change more quickly and easily than others and the analyst must consider how the varying rates of change can interact with each other. The balance sheet, even more than the profit and loss statement, is a form of shorthand which presents in monetary form assets which in ...

Crossing the Heliospheric Current Sheet

1999
The heliospheric current sheet (HCS), the largest coherent structure in the heliosphere, is a wavy surface separating the two opposite magnetic polarity hemispheres of the heliosphere. Joint WIND magnetic field and electron observations near solar minimum conditions and far away from the Earth’s bow shock reveal that while sector boundary crossings are
