Estimation of Transformer Saturation Characteristics From Inrush Current Waveforms

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2006
This paper presents a novel method to estimate transformer saturation characteristics that extend to the 'deep' saturation region. The basic idea of the method is to use recorded inrush voltage and current waveforms to estimate the saturation characteristics.

Fast compensation of current transformer saturation

2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe), 2010
This paper presents a novel method for current transformer (CT) saturation detection and compensation. In the method, CT saturation characteristics are represented by a partial nonlinear regression model. The parameters of this model can be estimated rapidly and accurately using both unsaturated and saturated sections of the waveform of a secondary ...

Estimation of the primary current in a saturated transformer

[1991] Proceedings of the 30th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2002
It is pointed out that, when a current in a power system is measured using a transformer, the measurement can be distorted by transformer saturation. The authors examine two methods of estimating the primary current from the secondary in the presence of saturation.

Current Transformer Saturation Effects on Coordinating Time Interval

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2011
The primary function of protective devices is to remove faulted equipment from the electrical system. It is typically very advantageous for these devices to isolate as small of a section of the electrical system as possible. Overcurrent protection is the most common protection function used, as faulted equipment typically results in a large short ...

Detection of Partial Saturation and Waveform Compensation of Current Transformers

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2015
Derivative-based approaches have been widely used for detecting current-transformer (CT) saturation. This letter proposes an efficient approach for detecting CT saturation with a generic discrimination index without the need for setting definition. For this aim, the simultaneous samples-based multiplication of the secondary current by its derivative is

Current Transformer Burden and Saturation

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 1979
A tutorial review of the steady-state and transient behavior of current transformers used with power system relays and meters is presented. ANSI accuracy standards are discussed and consideration is given to the significance of burden and saturation in the application of protective relays.

Study on Transient Saturation Characteristic of Current Transformer

2020 7th International Forum on Electrical Engineering and Automation (IFEEA), 2020
Current transformer (CT) is an important measuring equipment to transfer the current signal from the primary side of the system to the secondary side. Most relay protection depends on the current signal transferred by CT. However, CT is prone to transient saturation due to the influence of the aperiodic component of the fault current. This paper deeply

Correction of Saturated Current Transformers Secondary Current Using ANNs

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2006
Current transformers (CTs) provide instrument-level current signals to meters and protective relays. Protective relays' accuracy and performance are directly related to steady-state and transient performance of CTs. CT saturation could lead to protective relay maloperation or even prevent tripping.

A Scheme for Detection and Assessment of Current Transformer Saturation

2017 9th International Conference on Measuring Technology and Mechatronics Automation (ICMTMA), 2017
Current transformer (CT) saturation may result in the distortion of CT secondary current, which will give rise to improper operation of relay protection devices in power system. In this paper, a novel scheme is proposed to detect CT saturation and assess the level of saturation.

Neural network for current transformer saturation correction

1999 IEEE Transmission and Distribution Conference (Cat. No. 99CH36333), 1999
Current transformer (CT) saturation can cause protective relay misoperation or even prevent tripping. This paper presents use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to correct CT secondary waveform distortions. The ANN is trained to achieve the inverse transfer function of iron-core toroidal current transformers which are widely used in protective systems.
