The impact of current transformer saturation on the distance protection
2016 17th International Scientific Conference on Electric Power Engineering (EPE), 2016The distance protection relay measures the line voltage and line current at the relay location and evaluates the ratio between these quantities. Distance relays are widely used on transmission, and even distribution systems. Current transformers (CT) are the very important part of the power system protection.

New method of detection of current transformer saturation
11th IET International Conference on Developments in Power Systems Protection (DPSP 2012), 2012A new method for detection occurrences of CT saturation is presented in this paper. The presented algorithm applies only first order derivatives of signals which is possible it has been designed in a new innovative methodology in which phase current signals are considered as coordinates of a 3D vector.

Statistical approach for evaluation of current transformer saturation
2018 Simposio Brasileiro de Sistemas Eletricos (SBSE), 2018Historically, power system protection schemes were performed by electromechanical relays and regime symmetrical component currents. Many modern digital relays have been installed in the last years, replacing old electromechanical solutions, but not accompanied by the current transformers (CT) substitution due to their long life span.

A new method of current transformer saturation detection in the presence of noise
2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition, 2014The nonlinear characteristics of magnetization of a current transformer (CT) can cause waveform distortion in the secondary current, which may result in malfunction of protective relays. This phenomenon is known as CT saturation. The accurate saturation detection, by the use of digital signal processing techniques applied to secondary current, plays an

Current-Transformer Saturation Detection With Genetically Optimized Neural Networks
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2005Application of the genetic algorithm for the optimization of the artificial-neural-network (ANN)-based current-transformer (CT) saturation detector is presented. To determine the most suitable ANN topology for the CT state classifier, the rules of evolutionary improvement of the characteristics of individuals by concurrence and heredity are used.

Current related relaying algorithms immune to saturation of current transformers
6th International Conference on Developments in Power Systems Protection, 1997Current transformers (CTs) supplying protective relays may suffer permanent or transient saturation under severe faults. The majority of protective relays are more or less sensitive to CT saturation. On the other hand, contemporary microprocessor-based relays open the window of opportunity for performing sophisticated checking in order to either ...

Morphological Lifting Scheme for Current Transformer Saturation Detection and Compensation
IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers, 2008Current transformer (CT) saturation can cause protective relay mal-operation or even prevent tripping. The wave shape of the secondary current is severely distorted as the CT is forced into deep saturation when the residual flux in the core adds to the flux change caused by faults.

Compensation of saturation effects in current transformers using neural networks
Proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Signal Processing and its Applications (Cat.No.01EX467), 2002Magnetic current transformers (CTs) are currently used in electrical devices in order to measure currents. The accuracy of CTs can severely decrease in case of saturation of the magnetic core, which can severely distort the current observed at the secondary coil of the CT.

A novel nanocrystalline-based current transformer working on saturated region
2017 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC), 2017AC current sensors are key components in the monitoring systems of electric power systems and are generally based on detecting the magnetic field induced around electric wires to measure the current into it. The most used current sensors are those based on Current Transformer (CT) that, in general, uses a ferromagnetic core and a coil around it in ...

Currently, electromagnetic current transformers (CT) are widely used in the electric power industry as primary current transmitters. A feature of their design is the presence of a ferromagnetic core, which in certain transient modes of operation of the power system (for example, a short-circuit) can be saturated, while causing non-linear distortion of ...
