The cost of active network management schemes at distribution level [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The growth of wind generation in distribution networks is leading to the development of Active Network Management (ANM) strategies. ANM systems aim to increase the capacity of renewable and distributed generation (DG) that can connect to the network.

Benefits of demand-side response in providing frequency response service in the future GB power system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The demand for ancillary service is expected to increase significantly in the future Great Britain (GB) electricity system due to high penetration of wind.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Integrating data, knowledge, and expertise for policy advice: understanding the practices of Dutch organized crime control professionals

open access: yesData & Policy
Current research on data in policy has primarily focused on street-level bureaucrats, neglecting the changes in the work of policy advisors. This research fills this gap by presenting an explorative theoretical understanding of the integration of data ...

Social signals and sustainability: ambiguity about motivations can affect status perceptions of efficiency and curtailment behaviors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Perceived status can affect the diffusion of pro-environmental behaviors and sustainable consumption. However, the status of different forms of sustainable consumption has not been adequately explored.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Component Outage Estimation based on Support Vector Machine

open access: yes, 2018
Predicting power system component outages in response to an imminent hurricane plays a major role in preevent planning and post-event recovery of the power system.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Mitigating Wind Energy Impacts on Wildlife: Approaches for Multiple Taxa

open access: yesHuman-Wildlife Interactions, 2017
Mitigating impacts of wind energy development on wildlife is important for conservation and public acceptance of this energy source. We provide an overview of approaches to mitigate impacts of onshore wind energy development on wildlife, following steps ...
