Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

Curvature Best Basis: A Novel Criterion to Dynamically Select a Single Best Basis as the Extracted Feature for Periocular Recognition

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2022
Aiming at the problems in the best basis selection, this paper presents a novel criterion based on the statistical measurement of the curvature wavelet coefficient to dynamically select the single best basis of the quad-tree wavelet packet transformation.

Speciation Through the Lens of Population Dynamics: A Theoretical Primer on How Small and Large Populations Diverge

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Population size and dynamics fundamentally shape speciation by influencing genetic drift, founder events, and adaptive potential. Small populations may speciate rapidly due to stronger drift, whereas large populations harbor more genetic diversity, which can alter divergence trajectories. We highlight theoretical models that incorporate population size

Manipulation of anisotropic Zhang–Rice exciton in van der Waals antiferromagnets NiPS3-x Se x by anion substitution

open access: yesnpj 2D Materials and Applications
The spin-entangled Zhang-Rice (ZR) exciton observed in the van der Waals magnet NiPS3 has garnered significant interest due to its strong correlation with magnetic ordering and long coherence.

Surface Roughness and Land Use in Slovenia

open access: yesActa Geographica Slovenica, 2004
The article describes characteristics of several relief indicators (surface height, surface slope, surface aspect, height coefficient of surface roughness, slope coefficient of surface roughness, and aspect coefficient of surface roughness) relative to ...

Circulating histones as clinical biomarkers in critically ill conditions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circulating histones are emerging as promising biomarkers in critical illness due to their diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic potential. Detection methods such as ELISA and mass spectrometry provide reliable approaches for quantifying histone levels in plasma samples.

ERBIN limits epithelial cell plasticity via suppression of TGF‐β signaling

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In breast and lung cancer patients, low ERBIN expression correlates with poor clinical outcomes. Here, we show that ERBIN inhibits TGF‐β‐induced epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in NMuMG breast and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. ERBIN suppresses TGF‐β/SMAD signaling and reduces TGF‐β‐induced ERK phosphorylation.

Cost-Effective Optical Fiber Curvature Sensor With Ultrahigh Sensitivity Based on Two Microcollapses in Silica Capillary

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2018
We proposed an optical fiber curvature sensor based on two microcollapses in silica capillary that was spliced between single-mode fibers. Only commercial fiber fusion splicer was needed in the fabrication process.

On curvature and similarity.

open access: yesMichigan Mathematical Journal, 1983
Let \(B_ 1(\Omega)\) denote the class of bounded Hilbert space operators T such that \(T-\lambda I\) is onto and has one dimensional kernel for \(\lambda \in \Omega\) and such that \(\bigvee_{\lambda \in \Omega}\ker(T- \lambda I)\) is dense in the Hilbert space.

Thermostable neutral metalloprotease from Geobacillus sp. EA1 does not share thermolysin's preference for substrates with leucine at the P1′ position

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Knowing how proteases recognise preferred substrates facilitates matching proteases to applications. The S1′ pocket of protease EA1 directs cleavage to the N‐terminal side of hydrophobic residues, particularly leucine. The S1′ pocket of thermolysin differs from EA's at only one position (leucine in place of phenylalanine), which decreases cleavage ...
