A transfer matrix model of large deformations of curved rods

Computers & Structures, 2009
Transfer matrix models have been frequently used to analyze the structural behavior of rods, including curved and pretwisted ones. The advantages of these models include their relative simplicity, numerical efficiency and ease of implementation. Previous investigations did not include nonlinear analyses of curved rods that undergo large deformations ...

Derivation of the model of elastic curved rods from three-dimensional micropolar elasticity

ANNALI DELL'UNIVERSITA' DI FERRARA, 2007
In this paper we derive a model of curved elastic rods from the three-dimensional linearized micropolar elasticity. Derivation is based on the asymptotic expansion method with respect to the thickness of the rod. The method is used without any a priori assumption on the scaling of the unknowns.

Justification of the dynamic model of curved rods

Asymptotic Analysis, 2002
In this work the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of the evolution problem of three‐dimensional linearized elastic curved rod‐like bodies with respect to the small thickness ε of the rod is analyzed. It is found that, when ε tends to zero, the solution converges, in an appropriate sense, to a single space‐variable function being an inextensible ...

A Model of Irregular Curved Rods

2002
In this paper we derive a model of curved elastic rods with a piecewise smooth middle curve from the model of curved rods with smooth middle curves. The obtained model is the same as the model of junction of two straight rods derived directly from the three--dimensional linearized elasticity.

Evolution model of curved rods

2000
Predmet ovog rada je izvod i opravdanje jednodimenzionalnih modela u teoriji elastičnosti. Promatramo problem gibanja tankog lineariziranog elastičnog zakrivljenog štapa, te pripadnu svojstvenu zadaću. Rad je sastavljen iz tri poglavlja. U prvom poglavlju donosimo osnovne rezultate dobivene za problem ravnoteže lineariziranog elastičnog zakrivljenog ...

A numerical method for solving the curved rod model

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2006
AbstractIn this work a numerical procedure for the solution of the one‐dimensional equilibrium model of linear elastic curved rods is derived. The middle curve of the curved rod is approximated by a piecewise linear curve while applied loads are approximated by a piecewise constant function.

An asymptotic non-linear model for thin-walled rods with strongly curved open cross-section

International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 2006
Abstract In this paper, we present a non-linear one-dimensional model for thin-walled rods with open strongly curved cross-section, obtained by asymptotic methods. A dimensional analysis of the non-linear three-dimensional equilibrium equations lets appear dimensionless numbers which reflect the geometry of the structure and the level of applied ...

Dynamic model of curved rods

2000
The dynamic model of curved rod is obtained as an approximation of oscillations of three-dimensional curved rod--like linearized elastic body. The corresponding convergence result is stated.

Derivation of the elastic force of springs from the curved rod model

Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences - Series IIB - Mechanics, 2001
In this paper the Hook law for the cylindrical springs is derived from the linearized elasticity. The cylindrical spring is the elastic curved rod with the helicoidal middle curve. The curved rod model is used to obtain the behaviour of the spring subjected to the longitudinal force.
