Optical coherence tomography and histological assessment of cutaneous vasculature and neural changes in long-term smokers: an exploratory study

open access: yesScientific Reports
Smoking affects microcirculation by damaging endothelial cells and reducing blood flow. Vascular disease is also thought to contribute to the development of diabetic neuropathy, resulting in the decrease of nerve fiber density.

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Prognostic significance of DNA cytometry in cutaneous malignant lymphomas. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The current classification of cutaneous malignant lymphomas (ML) into low-grade and high-grade lymphomas was found to be of limited reproducibility and permitted only a rough prediction about outcome.

Exosomes derived from mouse vibrissa dermal papilla cells promote hair follicle regeneration during wound healing by activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway

open access: yesJournal of Nanobiotechnology
Hair follicle (HF) regeneration during wound healing continues to present a significant clinical challenge. Dermal papilla cell-derived exosomes (DPC-Exos) hold immense potential for inducing HF neogenesis.

Pathogenic Neurofibromatosis type 1 gene variants in tumors of non‐NF1 patients and role of R1276

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Somatic variants of the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene occur across neoplasms without clinical manifestation of the disease NF1. We identified emerging somatic pathogenic NF1 variants and hotspots, for example, at the arginine finger 1276. Those missense variants provide fundamental information about neurofibromin's role in cancer.

Identification of human papillomavirus DNA in cutaneous lesions of Cowden syndrome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Background: Cowden syndrome (CS) or multiple hamartoma syndrome is a cancer-associated genodermatosis inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. One of the diagnostic criteria is facial papules which are felt to be trichilemmomas, benign hair follicle ...

First-line ipilimumab plus nivolumab in advanced merkel cell carcinoma: a meta-analysis of prospective trials and real-world validation cohort

open access: yesCancer Immunology, Immunotherapy
Background Advanced Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has a high response rate to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). While early phase studies have demonstrated activity of dual ICB with anti-PD-1 plus anti-CTLA-4 agents in both the first- and second-line ...

Increased Risk of Postoperative Complications in Patients with Hypertension Undergoing Mohs Micrographic Surgery

open access: yesJID Innovations
Hypertension has been previously associated with higher intraoperative bleeding risk in patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery. However, the risks of common postoperative Mohs micrographic surgery complications have not been substantiated by large

A Novel 3D Culture Model of Human ASCs Reduces Cell Death in Spheroid Cores and Maintains Inner Cell Proliferation Compared With a Nonadherent 3D Culture

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
3D cell culture technologies have recently shown very valuable promise for applications in regenerative medicine, but the most common 3D culture methods for mesenchymal stem cells still have limitations for clinical application, mainly due to the ...

Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.
