Generation of cutter paths for hard material in wire EDM

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2008
Abstract A heuristic method for generating a cutter path for superhard material is presented. The cutter path should satisfy various constraints that come from physical reality in industry; for example, a constraint about undesired projections of the cut-off pieces, and that about vibration and deformation generated by the cutter.

A survey of cutter path construction techniques for milling machines

International Journal of Production Research, 1994
Abstract Cutter path generation is a surprisingly active research and development area. Together with cutter path topology, it is critical to the validity and efficiency of cutter path generation. Here we survey the main generation techniques used and discuss the performance of each method.

Hybrid Cutter Path Generation for 2.5D Milling Operation

Volume 1: 22nd Computers and Information in Engineering Conference, 2002
2.5D milling operation is widely used in a variety of applications. Generating efficient cutter path for 2.5D milling operation is very important in order to shorten total machining time and thus enhance overall throughput. However, most existing cutter path generation algorithms do not produce highly efficient cutter paths for certain type of complex ...

Generation of Five-Axis Cutter Paths for Turbomachinery Components

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 1999
A simple, yet useful algorithm is developed to generate tool paths with global interference checking for five-axis point milling of turbomachinery components. Based on the projected distance between the surface data and the cutter-axis of a cylindrical ball-end mill, interference between the surface of a workpiece and the cutter can be detected.

Tool path generation for five-axis machining of blisks with barrel cutters

International Journal of Production Research, 2018
A barrel cutter has a cutting segment with a large radius on its profile, and this arc segment allows the cutter to tilt away from the part surface, avoiding the collisions of the tool with the par...

Automatic generation of NC cutter path from massive data points

Computer-Aided Design, 1998
Abstract This paper proposes methodologies and algorithms through which a three-axis NC cutter path can be directly generated from massive data points obtained with contact or non-contact measuring devices. At the beginning, a Z-map model is employed to set up mesh points in order to economize on the use of computer memory.

CNC Cutter Path Generation in Shape Deposition Manufacturing

Concurrent Product and Process Engineering, 1995
Abstract Shape Deposition Manufacturing is a layered manufacturing process which attempts to build functional parts by incremental material deposition and fusion of three-dimensional layers. Five-axis CNC machining is employed in Shape Deposition Manufacturing to machine the layers to the net shape.

Tool path planning without interference for convex surfaces based on the optimal cutter orientation of the annular cutter

International Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing (IJIDeM), 2017
Most of the automobile panels are surface. Considering the limitation of machining the surface with the ball-end cutter, the non-spherical cutter is used more and more widely, but the interference usually occurs when machining the surface. Therefore, in this paper, the overcut interference produced by the annular cutter in machining convex surface of ...

Cutter Path Strategies for Shoulder Milling of Thin Deflecting Walls

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
The main problem associate with the machining of thin-wall component is the wall deflection which resulting in dimensional surface error that leads to part rejection. The magnitude of wall deflection is induced by the cutting force generated during the material removal process which is governed mainly from the selection of cutter path strategies ...

Development of styrofoam cutter NC machine for intricate cutting path

2017 7th International Annual Engineering Seminar (InAES), 2017
This paper deals with the design, manufacture and application of NC machine for cutting 2D intricate path of plane styrofoam. The cutter uses nickel wire heated by DC electric current. The X and Y axis is moved using open loop controlled stepper motor.
