A Cutting Force Estimator for CNC Machining Centers

CIRP Annals, 2004
Abstract This study presents a cutting force estimator topology for feed drives of CNC vertical machining centers to compute the machining forces accurately. The estimator employs recursive discrete Fourier transform to not only estimate inertial forces on the system but also to filter effectively the noise components in the measurements.

Precise Cutting Force Estimation by Hybrid Estimation of DC/AC Components

2020 International Symposium on Flexible Automation, 2020
Abstract External sensor-less cutting force estimation using a load-side disturbance observer (LDOB) has potential to estimate the cutting force with high accuracy in both feed and cross-feed directions. However, the accuracy of its low frequency components in feed direction decrease due to effect of the friction and heat of a ball-screw-

Experimental estimation of friction force in lubricated cutting of steel

Wear, 2010
Friction force generated in lubricated cutting of steel is experimentally estimated by recording the tangential force experienced by the spherical face of a pin rubbing against a freshly cut surface. The pin and the cutting tool are both submerged in the lubricant and the pin is situated on the cut-track to record the force.

An enhanced method for cutting force estimation in peripheral milling

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2013
A new model for cutting force estimation is presented in this paper. It is based on the specific cutting force coefficient, which is defined as a function of chip thickness. The distinguishing feature of the proposed cutting force model is the use of average chip thickness for cutting force calculation on each position of the cutting tool, in such a ...

Milling process study, assuming estimation of cutting force

2011 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM), 2011
The paper presents results of research of a milling process, which include experimental studies associated with determination of cutting forces. Cutting depth is a parameter that was varied in the course of the measurements. Analytical models were constructed for cutting force prediction on the basis of experimental data obtained for tool geometry ...

Turning force control systems based on the estimated cutting force signals

Proceedings of the 1999 American Control Conference (Cat. No. 99CH36251), 1999
While a cutting tool is machining a workpiece at various cutting depth, the feedrate is usually selected based on the maximum depth of cut. Many adaptive control techniques have been reported that can adjust the feedrate to maintain the constant cutting force.

Cutting force analysis to estimate the friction force in linear guideways of CNC machine

Measurement, 2016
Abstract Linear guideways are widely applied in advanced machinery industries worldwide for different types of CNC machine (e.g., turning, milling, grinding, and gantry). All of these machines require accuracy and precision in the machining operations to manufacture quality products.

Longwall shearer cutting force estimation [PDF]

open access: possible
A methodology to monitor the real-time cutting forces generated by a longwall shearer is developed. Longwall shearers are the single productive element in an underground longwall coal mine, and are a major source of unscheduled system downtime. The cutting forces constitute the interaction between the longwall and the coal face. Knowledge of the forces

Estimation of cutting forces with CNC motor current data

2022
The monitoring of machining process, tool damage and machine health are crucial to the part quality while avoiding damage to the machine tool. The cutting force provides important information about the state of the process and cutting tool because it correlates to the physics-based mathematical model of the process. This thesis presents methods for the

Real-time tool wear estimation using cutting force measurements

Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2002
Presents a robust strategy for estimating tool wear in metal cutting operations. The proposed estimation algorithm consists of two components: a recurrent neural network to model the tool wear dynamics, and a robust observer to estimate the tool wear from this model using measurements of cutting force.
