Biosynthesis of a linoleic acid allylic epoxide: mechanistic comparison with its chemical synthesis and leukotriene A biosynthesis[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2009
Biosynthesis of the leukotriene A (LTA) class of epoxide is a lipoxygenase-catalyzed transformation requiring a fatty acid hydroperoxide substrate containing at least three double bonds. Here, we report on biosynthesis of a dienoic analog of LTA epoxides

Nutrient disturbance in a shallow aquaculture pond impacts Microcystis gene expression but does not impact bacterial community function during bloom conditions

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) are worldwide issues. Reduced nitrogen forms (ammonium and urea) have recently been measured in freshwater systems at concentrations not previously recorded. These reduced nitrogen forms have been shown to favor the proliferation of harmful cyanobacteria.

Description of Flavicapitulum gen. nov. and two new species of Marmoreocelis from thermal habitats in the Americas

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract Three novel taxa in the Coleofasciculales were observed in hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States, and in the Tabaconcito thermal springs on the Rio Tabacón in Costa Rica. Flavicapitulum vaporiphilum gen. et sp. nov. was located in a supported clade with Gracilinea and Marmoreocelis.

A novel covalent modification of nitrogenase in a cyanobacterium

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 2000
In extracts of the unicellular cyanobacterium Gloeothece, the Fe‐protein of nitrogenase can be separated by SDS–PAGE into two antigenically identifiable components. Unlike the situation in photosynthetic bacteria such as Rhodospirillum rubrum, these two forms do not arise from covalent modification of the protein by ADP‐ribosylation.

A Phosphorylation‐Dependent Partner‐Switching‐Like Module Regulates a Glycosyltransferase Required for Heterocyst Polysaccharide Layer Formation in Anabaena sp. Strain PCC 7120

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
The glycosyltransferase All4160 is regulated by the reversible phosphorylation of Ser74. The kinase Alr3423 phosphorylates and inactivates All4160, while the SpoIIE‐like phosphatase HenR restores its activity through dephosphorylation. A nonphosphorylatable variant of All4160 bypasses the need for HenR, which demonstrates that a phosphorylation ...

Recombinant Expression and Purification of the Cyanobacterial Chaperone HtpG from Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942

open access: yesMethods and Protocols
The 90 kDa Heat Shock Protein (Hsp90) is an essential and highly conserved molecular chaperone that supports the folding and maturation of a diverse array of client proteins across prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.

Diel Infection of a Cyanobacterium by a Contractile Bacteriophage [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 2005
ABSTRACT Light was found to strongly influence the infection of a freshwater cyanobacterium ( Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942) by a contractile DNA phage named AS-1. Phage progeny production was correlated with the amount of light in the laboratory and occurred in a diel pattern under natural light.

Structural Analyses of Polysaccharides Extracted from Cyanobacterial Extracellular Gels and Oriented Liquid Crystalline Microfiber Processing by Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Assisted Electrospinning

open access: yesGels
Sacran is a supergiant cyanobacterial polysaccharide that forms mesogenic supercoil rods that exhibit liquid crystalline (LC) gels at deficient concentrations of around 0.5 wt%, and has several bioactive stimuli-responsive functions.

Effects of Cylindrospermopsin Producing Cyanobacterium and Its Crude Extracts on a Benthic Green Alga—Competition or Allelopathy?

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2015
Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by filamentous cyanobacteria which could work as an allelopathic substance, although its ecological role in cyanobacterial-algal assemblages is mostly unclear.
