Abstract Objective The BRSK1 gene encodes brain‐specific serine/threonine kinase 1 (also known as SAD‐B kinase), which is almost exclusively expressed in the brain and plays critical roles in neuronal polarization, neurotransmitter release, mitochondrial dynamics, and neuronal maturation.

Summary Managing pain in horses is challenging despite the availability of nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs, local anaesthetics, opioids and α2‐adrenoreceptor agonists. While α2‐agonists are widely used for sedation and restraint, their analgesic properties remain underutilised.

P. acnes infection impairs the mitochondrial biogenesis of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) through the AMPK/SIRT‐1/PGC‐1α signaling pathway. This results in impaired mitochondria that are unable to generate sufficient ATP, and impaired delivery of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species to carry out the bactericidal process effectively.
