Cyclic behaviour and resistance of saturated sand under non-symmetrical loading conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This paper reports findings from an experimental study that aimed to investigate the undrained behaviour of sand in non-symmetrical cyclic loading, and to clarify the role of initial static shear in liquefaction resistance.

New opportunities for bioscaffold‐enabled spinal cord injury repair

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of bioscaffolds for spinal cord injury repair. We summarize the effects of bioscaffold properties on SCI repair, highlight different types of bioscaffolds, various fabrication strategies, and in vivo transformations for the clinical development of SCI‐repairing bioscaffolds.

Experimental Study on Strength Characteristics of Overconsolidated Gassy Clay

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Gassy clay, commonly encountered in coastal areas as overconsolidated deposits, demonstrates distinct mechanical properties posing risks for submarine geohazards and engineering stability. Consolidated undrained triaxial tests combined with cyclic simple

Portuguese unbound granular materials characterisation using cyclic triaxial tests

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Transport, 2012
Crushed materials with extensive granulometry – unbound granular materials (UGM) – are often used as unbound granular layers of road pavements, namely as granular sub-base and base. In spite of several studies having already been undertaken, the behaviour of these materials on pavement layers has not been sufficiently characterised, especially due to ...

Experimental and constitutive modeling investigations on marble in Jinping Underground Laboratory

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The objective of this study is to reveal the underlying mechanisms behind the brittle‐ductile transition of the marble through a combination of experimental research and constitutive modeling. A series of triaxial compression and triaxial cyclic loading tests are conducted.

A review on the Mullins effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The Mullins’ effect remains a major challenge in order to provide good mechanical modeling of the complex behavior of industrial rubber materials. It’s been forty years since Mullins [1] wrote his review on the phenomenon and still no general agreement ...

Effect of confining pressure on fracture characteristics and mineralogical behavior of tight sandstone specimens after hydraulic fracturing

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Hydraulic fracturing in tight sandstone and fracture propagation characteristics using backscattered electron‐scanning electron microscope (BSE‐SEM) images. Abstract This study focuses on hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted under triaxial conditions on tight sandstone specimens from Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Creep properties and constitutive model of diabase in deep water conveyance tunnels

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The axial and lateral creep characteristics of diabase were analyzed based on compression creep tests. The nonlinear viscoelastic‐plastic model capable of describing the whole creep process was established based on the fractional derivative and damage theories.

Microscopic Characteristics of Fractured Sandstone after Cyclic Freezing-Thawing and Triaxial Unloading Tests

open access: yesAdvance in Civil Engineering, 2019
The understanding of tunneling rock failure characteristics under unloading conditions in the cold region is critical for the proper design of rock tunneling support and mining safety operation.

Failure characteristics and the energy criterion of rock with a through‐going joint under true‐triaxial unloading conditions: Insights from the DEM model

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The rock failure mode is significantly influenced by the contributing factors, such as the joint inclination, the initial confining pressure, and the unloading point. We found six typical rock failure modes after a large number of numerical tests. Abstract Excavation unloading damages rock masses, with preferential failure along geological defects in ...
